​ปัจจุบันทั่วโลกมีเศษอาหารเหลือทิ้งถึง 1,300 ล้านตันต่อปี โดยเฉพาะในประเทศที่พัฒนาแล้วที่มีเศษอาหารเหลือทิ้งเป็นจำนวนมาก ในขณะที่ยังมีประชากรกว่า 1,000 ล้านคนทั่วโลกที่ตกอยู่ในสภาวะขาดแคลนอาหาร โดยมีของเสียจากอุตสาหกรรมอาหารมากกว่า 222 ล้านตันต่อปี
