ในรายวิชา selected topic ถือว่าเป็นรายวิชาที่สำคัญเพราะนิสิตทุกคนจะต้องทำไปเขียนเป็น Individual study อาจารย์ได้ให้นิสิตศึกษางานวิจัยที่มีความหลากหลายจากหลายๆแหล่งที่มา การเรียนในรายวิชานี้ ได้ให้ความสนใจการวิจัยมากขึ้น ทั้งนี้เพราะได้เล็งเห็นประโยชน์ของการวิจัยที่มีต่อการทำ IS จะเห็นได้ว่าการทำวิจัยมีประโยชน์หลายประการ ทั้งนี้ ถ้าจะกล่าวถึงจุดมุ่งหมายทั่วไปของการวิจัยอย่างกว้าง ๆ ในการทำการวิจัยใด ๆ ก็ตาม ผู้ทำการวิจัยจะมีจุดมุ่งหมายอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่งใน 2 ประการนี้ คือ
1. เพื่อเพิ่มพูนความรู้ใหม่ เนื่องจากธรรมชาติของมนุษย์มีความอยากรู้อยากเห็น อยากทราบเหตุผลและปรากฏการณ์ของสิ่งต่าง ๆ ที่เกิดขึ้น จึงทำการวิจัยเพื่อค้นหาคำตอบ สิ่งใดที่พอรู้อยู่บ้างก็ทำให้รู้และเข้าใจดียิ่งขึ้น เป็นการเพิ่มพูนวิทยาการให้กว้างขวางลึกซึ้ง
2. เพื่อนำผลไปประยุกต์หรือใช้ให้เป็นประโยชน์ จุดมุ่งหมายของการวิจัยนี้เกิดขึ้นเมื่อมีปัญหาที่จะต้องค้นคว้าหาความจริงเพื่อนำผลที่ได้จากการวิจัยไปแก้ปัญหา หรือประยุกต์ใช้ให้เป็นประโยชน์ต่อไป
จุดมุ่งหมายของการวิจัยทั้ง 2 ประการนี้ มีความสัมพันธ์ต่อเนื่องกัน ทั้งนี้เพราะจุดมุ่งหมายประการแรกมุ่งวิจัยเพื่อเพิ่มพูนความรู้ใหม่ทำให้ค้นพบกฎหรือทฤษฎี ซึ่งสามารถนำไปประยุกต์ใช้ให้เป็นประโยชน์ได้ตามจุดมุ่งหมายของการวิจัยในข้อ 2
