สำหรับในประเทศไทย กระทรวงศึกษาธิการได้เร่งผลักดันแนวทางการจัดการศึกษาที่บูรณาการวิทยาศาสตร์ วิศวกรรมเทคโนโลยี และคณิตศาสตร์ (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics Education : STEM)หรือที่เรียกว่า ระบบ “สเต็มศึกษา”เพื่อสร้างความเข้มแข็งให้แก่การศึกษาไทยและการศึกษาในประชาคมอาเซียนเริ่มจากความร่วมมือในการประชุมเชิงปฏิบัติการของผู้บริหารสถานศึกษาในภูมิภาคอาเซียน เพื่อสร้างวิสัยทัศน์การเป็นผู้นำทางวิชาการ มีความรู้ความเข้าใจ และกลวิธีในการจัดกิจกรรมการเรียนรู้เพื่อปรับการเรียนเปลี่ยนการสอนของครูในโรงเรียนต่อไปซึ่งการประชุมนี้ได้นำไปขยายผลภายในประเทศเพื่อระดมความคิดมาแล้วหลายครั้ง โดย สถาบันส่งเสริมการสอนวิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี (สสวท.)ซึ่งรับผิดชอบเกี่ยวกับหลักสูตรการเรียนการสอนวิทยาศาสตร์ คณิตศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี ได้จัดทำร่างแผนยุทธศาสตร์การพัฒนาการเรียนรู้วิทยาศาสตร์คณิตศาสตร์ และเทคโนโลยี พ.ศ. 2555 –2559 โดยตั้งเป้าจะพัฒนาเด็กไทยให้มีความสามารถระดับนานาชาติภายในปี 2570 หรือผลสัมฤทธิ์ทางการเรียนวิชาวิทยาศาสตร์ คณิตศาสตร์ของนักเรียนทุกช่วงชั้นจะต้องเพิ่มขึ้นร้อยละ 4 ต่อปีซึ่งจะวัดผลจากการสอบโอเน็ตซึ่งเป้าหมายนี้จะใช้ระบบ“สเต็มศึกษา”เป็นกลยุทธ์หลักในการพัฒนา
