ประวัติแฮนด์บอลในประเทศไทย

กีฬาแฮนด์บอลได้นำเข้ามาเผยแพร่ในประเทศไทย ตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2482 โดยอาจารย์กอง วิสุทธารมย์ อดีตอธิบดีกรมพลศึกษา ในสมัยนั้นแฮนด์บอลยังนิยมการเล่นแบบ 11 คนอยู่ แต่คนไทยเราไม่ค่อยจะนิยมเล่นกีฬาประเภทนี้กันเลยยกไป ซึ่งอาจเป็นเพราะประเทศไทยสามารถเล่นฟุตบอลได้ตลอดฤดูกาล กีฬาแฮนด์บอลจึงไม่เป็นที่นิยมเล่นดังกล่าว ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ.2500 อาจารย์ชนิต คงมนต์ ได้ไปดูงานด้านพลศึกษาในประเทศเดนมาร์ก และสวีเดน ได้นำกีฬาแฮนด์บอลนี้มาเผยแพร่อีกครั้งหนึ่ง โดยเริ่มบรรจุเข้าสอนในโรงเรียนฝึกหัดครูพลานามัย และวิทยาลัยพลศึกษาก่อนที่อื่นเพื่อเป็นการทดลอง และต่อมาก็ได้เผยแพร่ไปตามโรงเรียนต่างๆ บ้าง แต่ก็ยังไม่กว้างขวางนัก
ปัจจุบันวิทยาลัยพลศึกษาทั่วประเทศได้บรรจุวิชาแฮนด์บอลไว้ในหลักสูตร ตลอดจนหลักสูตรประโยคมัธยมศึกษาตอนปลายของกระทรวงศึกษาธิการ พ.ศ. 2518 ได้กำหนดเป็นวิชาบังคับ จึงนับได้ว่ากีฬาแฮนด์บอลเป็นที่รู้จักและนิยมกันอย่างกว้างขวางในหมู่นักเรียนวิทยาลัยพลศึกษา และประชาชนคนไทยมากยิ่งขึ้น
แฮนด์บอลได้บรรจุเข้าแข่งขันในกีฬาของวิทยาลัยพลศึกษาทั่วประเทศที่กรมพลศึกษาเป็นเจ้าภาพ เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2524 โดยการใช้กติกาการแข่งขันสากลฝ่ายละ 7 คน ปัจจุบัน นายปรีดา รอดโพธิ์ทอง อธิบดีกรมพลศึกษา ได้พิจารณาแล้วเห็นว่า กีฬาแฮนด์บอลเป็นกีฬาที่มีความเหมาะสมกับสภาพภูมิอากาศ และสภาพของคนไทย จึงได้ส่งเสริมและให้มีการฟื้นฟูกีฬาประเภทนี้ขึ้นอีกครั้งหนึ่ง โดยให้กองกีฬากรมพลศึกษาเป็นผู้ดำเนินการ ซึ่งจัดให้มีการอบรมผู้ฝึกสอน อบรมผู้ตัดสิน พร้อมทั้งจัดให้มีการแข่งขันกีฬาแฮนด์บอลในกีฬากรมพลศึกษาเป็นประจำทุกปี
