จากการศึกษาด้านผลสัมฤทธิ์ทางการเรียนเป็นความสามารถของนักเรียนในด้านต่างๆ ซึ่งเกิดจากนักเรียนได้รับประสบการณ์จากกระบวนการเรียนการสอน ซึ่งได้ศึกษาแนวทางในการวัดและประเมินผล การสร้างเครื่องมือวัดให้มีคุณภาพ สามารถวัดได้โดยการแสดงออกมาทั้ง 3 ด้าน คือ ด้านพุทธิพิสัย ด้านจิตพิสัย และด้านทักษะพิสัย ซึ่งเป็นการวัดผลสัมฤทธิ์ทางการเรียนสำหรับวิชาวิทยาศาสตร์ เพื่อให้รู้ว่าผู้เรียนได้รับทั้งเนื้อหาความรู้ทางวิทยาศาสตร์ กระบวนการทางวิทยาศาสตร์ จึงต้องวัดผลสัมฤทธิ์ทางการเรียนวิชาวิทยาศาสตร์ทั้ง 2 ส่วน จากการพิจารณาข้อมูลผลการทดสอบทางการศึกษาแห่งชาติ (O-NET) ย้อนหลัง 3 ปี ตั้งแต่ปีการศึกษา 2554 -2556 พบว่าผลสัมฤทธิ์ทางการเรียนในวิชาวิทยาศาสตร์ ของนักเรียนของไทยถืออยู่ในเกณฑ์ต่ำ โดยทุกปีมีค่าคะแนนเฉลี่ยต่ำกว่าร้อยละ 50 อาจมีสาเหตุที่ทำให้ผลการเรียนในวิชาวิทยาศาสตร์ต่ำ นั้นมาจากหลายปัจจัยเช่น ทัศนคติที่มองว่าวิชาวิทยาศาสตร์นั้นยาก ส่งผลให้ผู้เรียนเกิดความเบื่อหน่าย และ อีกสาเหตุคือปัจจัยด้านวิธีการสอนของครู ทั้งขณะที่ครูส่วนใหญ่พยายามคิดหาวิธีการสอนที่หลากหลาย เพื่อส่งเสริมให้นักเรียนเกิดความรู้ ทักษะในการเรียน แต่พบว่าการสอนโดยการบรรยาย มุ่งเน้นให้เด็กท่องจำ จัดกิจกรรมการเรียนการสอนที่เน้นครูเป็นสำคัญมากกว่าเน้นผู้เรียนเป็นสำคัญ เป็นปัญหาทำให้ผลสัมฤทธิ์ของนักเรียนไม่ดีขึ้น (เอื้อมพร หลินเจริญ และคณะ, 2552)
