อาณาจักรสุโขทัยก่อตั้งขึ้นประมาณ พ.ศ. 1780 พ่อขุนศรีอินทรา- ทิตย์ ทรงพระนามเดิมว่า พ่อขุนบางกลางหาว ทรงสถาปนาสุโขทัยขึ้นมา สร้างความเป็นปึกแผ่นให้กับชนชาติไทย โดยขยายเขตการปกครองออกไปอย่างกว้างขวาง สุโขทัยเป็นราชอาณาจักรของชาติไทย อยู่ประมาณ 200 ปี จึงถูกรวมเข้าเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของอาณาจักรอยุธยา เมื่อ พ.ศ. 1981

และพ่อขุนผาเมือง ก็กลับยกเมืองสุโขทัย ให้พ่อขุนบางกลางหาวครอง พร้อมทั้ง พระแสงขรรค์ชัยศรี และพระนาม กำมรเตงอัญศรีอินทรบดินทราทิตย์ ซึ่งพระเจ้าชัยวรมันที่ 7 ทรงพระราชทานให้พ่อขุนผาเมืองก่อนหน้านี้ โดยคาดว่า เหตุผลคือพ่อขุนผาเมืองมีพระนางสิขรเทวีพระมเหสี (ราชธิดาของพระเจ้าชัยวรมันที่ 7) ซึ่งพระองค์เกรงว่าชาวสุโขทัยจะไม่ยอมรับ แต่ก็กลัวว่าทางขอมจะไม่ไว้ใจจึงมอบพระนามพระราชทาน และพระแสงขรรค์ชัยศรี ขึ้นบรมราชาภิเษก พ่อขุนผาเมืองให้เป็นกษัตริย์ เพื่อเป็นการตบตาราชสำนักขอม
