Why I Love to Cook, by Claireooto, aged 43 and 3/4

I love to cook because it is the most important job in the world.

I love to cook because I love food. I love to think about combining textures, flavors, and colors. I think about it a lot. I get ridiculously excited when I come up with an idea for something new to make. Cooking dinner is one of my greatest pleasures in life. I believe cooking is like creating art, if you use your imagination and creativity.

I love to cook because it's temporal and yet nourishing. Yes, it’s fleeting – it’s made to be consumed, but that adds to its piquancy.

I love to cook because I have two little boys. They’re brilliant, funny, sweet and infuriating. They are the most fun to cook with, and they’ve taught me a lot about using my imagination, and about abandoning my preconceptions of how to cook things. Feeding them is a weighty sort of joy.

I love to cook because when I can't sleep at night, the vegetables in their drawers and the beans in their cupboards speak to me, and give me something comforting to think about - cheerful plans to make.

I love to cook because there's beauty in the pattern of doing something every day, and beauty in the way that it changes each day.

I really have to do some work now! The kitchn has become the most dangerous procrastination device!
