ทิศนา แขมมณี (2550 : 358-359) อธิบายขั้นตอนสำคัญของการสอนไว้ดังนี้

สุพิน บุญชูวงศ์ (2544 : 67) กล่าวถึงขั้นตอนในการสอนแบบบทบาทสมมติ ไว้ดังนี้
1. เลือกปัญหาที่นักเรียนส่วนมากในชั้นเรียนพบบ่อย ๆ หรือเป็นเรื่องที่เข้าใจยากจดจำยาก สับสน กล่าวตามสภาพจริง หรือได้ก็ไม่เหมาะสม
2. กำหนดตัวบุคคลให้เหมาะสมกับบทบาทนั้น ๆ เท่าที่ลักษณะของบุคคลเอื้ออำนวยให้กับสภาพความเป็นจริง

อาภรณ์ ใจเที่ยง (2550 : 161-163) อ้างใน กรมวิชาการ (2527 : 37 – 40) ได้เสนอขั้นตอนที่สำคัญของการสอนโดยใช้บทบาทสมมติมี 5 ขั้นตอน ในแต่ละขั้นตอนมีวิธีการสอน ดังนี้
1. ขั้นเตรียมการสอน เป็นการเตรียมใน 2 หัวข้อใหญ่ ได้แก่
- เตรียมจุดประสงค์ของการแสดงบทบาทสมมติให้แน่ชัดและเฉพาะเจาะจงว่าต้องการให้ผู้เรียนเกิดความรู้ความเข้าใจอะไรบ้างจากการแสดง


สิริวรรณ ศรีพหล และ พันทิพา อุทัยสุข (2540 : 106) กล่าวถึงองค์ประกอบของการสอนโดยการแสดงบทบาทสมมติ มีดังนี้
1. ผู้แสดงและผู้สังเกตการณ์
การแสดงบทบาทสมติ เมื่อนำมาปฏิบัติในห้องเรียนแล้วจะแยกกลุ่มผู้เรียนออกเป็น 2 กลุ่ม คือ กลุ่มผู้แสดงเป็นกลุ่มที่ได้รับมอบหมายบทบาทจากครูผู้สอนแล้ว จากการวางแผน การเรียนการสอนของผู้เรียนทั้งชั้นให้แสดงบทบาทต่าง ๆ กัน กับกลุ่มผู้ชมซึ่งจะเป็นกลุ่มสังเกตการณ์ โดยจะนำผลจากการสังเกตไปอภิปรายภายหลัง
2. เหตุการณ์ ประเด็น หรือปัญหา
ซึ่งอาจจะหยิบยกจากในแบบเรียน หรือผู้สอนสร้างขึ้นใหม่เองตามวัตถุประสงค์ที่กำหนดไว้ว่าจะให้ผู้เรียนรู้อะไรจากเหตุการณ์นั้น โดยทั่วไป ผู้สอนจะเป็นผู้กำหนดเหตุการณ์เอง และนำเหตุการณ์นั้น ๆ มาเสนอแก่ผู้เรียนเพื่อการแสดงต่อไป
3. ฉากและสื่อการสอน
ฉากมีเพียงที่จำเป็นเท่านั้น หรืออาจไม่ใช้เลยก็ได้ ส่วนสื่อ การสอนก็เช่นกัน จำเป็นไม่มากนัก ทั้งนี้เพราะความสำคัญของการเรียนการสอนด้วยการแสดงบทบาทสมมติขึ้นอยู่กับบทบาทของผู้แสดงมากกว่าสิ่งใด
