มอบมรดกของเราไว้ในมือเยาวชน
หลายต่อหลายครั้งเมื่อมีการสอบถามนักศึกษามหาวิทยาลัยว่า ประเทศไทยมีแหล่งมรดกโลกอยู่กี่แห่ง พวกเขาจะแสดงความไม่มั่นใจ บางคนเดาว่า 3 แห่ง บางคนก็คาดว่า 4 แห่ง คำตอบคือสถานที่ดังกล่าวมีอยู่ 5 แห่ง ได้แก่ แหล่งโบราณคดีบ้านเชียง อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์สุโขทัย-ศรีสัชนาลัย-กำแพงเพชร อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์พระนครศรีอยุธยา เขตรักษาพันธ์สัตว์ป่าทุ่งใหญ่-ห้วยขาแข้ง และ ผืนป่าเขาใหญ่-ดงพญาเย็น และเมื่อถามว่าพวกเขาจะปกป้องดูแลสถานที่อันทรงคุณค่าเหล่านี้อย่างไร นักศึกษาหลายคนก็ไม่มีคำตอบ
ทุกคนเป็นเจ้าของแหล่งมรดกโลก การปกป้องดูแลแหล่งมรดกโลกไม่ใช่เป็นหน้าที่ของหมู่บ้านใดหมู่บ้านหนึ่งหรือประเทศใดประเทศหนึ่ง แต่เป็นความรับผิดชอบร่วมกันของชุมชนโลก ด้วยเหตุนี้ ศูนย์มรดกโลกขององค์การการศึกษา วิทยาศาสตร์ และวัฒนธรรมแห่งสหประชาชาติ (UNESCO) จึงได้ริเริ่มโครงการการมีส่วนร่วมของเยาวชนในการอนุรักษ์และส่งเสริมมรดกโลกในปี พ.ศ. 2537 เพื่อช่วยกระตุ้นให้เยาวชนมีความพยายามที่จะปกป้องดูแลมรดกโลกอย่างแข็งขันด้วยการมีส่วนร่วมในกิจกรรมต่างๆ ที่จัดขึ้นโดยโรงเรียนสมาชิกเครือข่ายโครงการการศึกษาเพื่อความเข้าใจอันดีระหว่างชาติ (UNESCO Associated Schools Project (ASP) Network)
ในปี พ.ศ. 2543 อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์สุโขทัย-ศรีสัชนาลัย-กำแพงเพชร ได้เป็นเจ้าภาพจัดให้ กลุ่มนักเรียนและครูจากทั่วเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้เข้าร่วมการสัมมนา ซึ่งนับได้ว่าเป็นครั้งแรกที่ได้มีการนำการศึกษาเรื่องมรดกโลกไปใช้ในการเรียนการสอนอย่างแท้จริง ในระหว่างการสัมมนา กลุ่มนักเรียนและครูดังกล่าวได้ทดลองใช้คู่มือการศึกษาที่เรียกว่า “มรดกโลกในมือเยาวชน” ที่องค์การ UNESCO จัดทำขึ้น โดยมีผู้เชี่ยวชาญจากกรมศิลปากรและครูในท้องถิ่นทำงานร่วมกันกับกลุ่มครูและนักเรียนที่เข้าร่วมการสัมมนาดังกล่าวด้วย
นายธาราพงศ์ ศรีสุชาติ ผู้อำนวยการสำนักโบราณคดี กรมศิลปากร กล่าวว่า “เมื่อสิ้นสุดการสัมมนา ผมคิดว่าพวกเขามีความเข้าใจอัจฉริยภาพของคนโบราณที่สร้างมรดกโลกแห่งนี้ และกลับออกไปพร้อมกับแนวคิดที่ชัดเจนขึ้นว่า “มรดก” คืออะไร “โบราณคดี” คืออะไร และ “เทคโนโลยีสมัยโบราณ (Ancient Technology) คืออะไร
คู่มือการศึกษามรดกโลกซึ่งจัดทำขึ้นโดยผู้เชี่ยวชาญเรื่องมรดกโลกและนักการศึกษาของโรงเรียนสมาชิกเครือข่าย ASP เป็นเครื่องมือให้ครูสามารถบูรณาการเรื่องมรดกโลกเข้ากับวิชาต่างๆ ตามหลักสูตรของโรงเรียน เพื่อช่วยให้เยาวชนเกิดความตระหนักในความสำคัญของมรดกโลกเพิ่มขึ้น ทั้งนี้ ผู้ที่สนใจคู่มือดังกล่าวสามารถดาวน์โหลดได้จาก http://whc.unesco.org/en/educationkit
นอกจากนี้ องค์การ UNESCO ยังได้ริเริ่มโครงการใหม่คือ “อาสาสมัครมรดกโลก : เด็กน้อยพร้อมลุย” (World Heritage Volunteers : Patrimonito Rolls Up the Sleeves) ซึ่งมีกิจกรรมต่างๆ รวมถึงการจัดทำคู่มือการศึกษาและการส่งเสริมค่ายอาสามรดกโลก เพื่อสนับสนุนการศึกษานอกระบบเกี่ยวกับมรดกโลกด้วย Patrimonito เป็นสัญลักษณ์แทนโครงการการศึกษามรดกโลก ซึ่งระหว่างเดือนมิถุนายนถึงเดือนตุลาคม ปี พ.ศ. 2551 ได้มีการจัดค่ายอาสาขึ้น 12 ค่าย ใน 10 ประเทศ และมีเยาวชนอาสาเข้าร่วมกว่า 150 คน รายละเอียดเพิ่มเติมเกี่ยวกับโครงการฯ สามารถสืบค้นได้จาก http://www.unesco.org/ccivs/patrimonito.htm
สำหรับในประเทศ ค่ายอาสาแห่งแรกจัดขึ้นที่อุทยานแห่งชาติเขาใหญ่อันเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของผืนป่าเขาใหญ่-ดงพญาเย็น ซึ่งนับเป็นมรดกโลกแห่งหนึ่ง โดยมีอาสาสมัคร 10 คน จาก 7 ประเทศ เข้าร่วมในค่ายอาสาดังกล่าวเป็นเวลา 2 สัปดาห์ เพื่อช่วยสร้างทางเดินของนักท่องเที่ยวและปลูกต้นไม้ 2
องค์การ UNESCO ได้ส่งเสริมการใช้นฤมิตศิลป์เป็นเครื่องมือในการเรียนการสอนเกี่ยวกับการศึกษา มรดกโลกมานับตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2543 การนำนฤมิตศิลป์ไปใช้ในการแสวงหาและเรียนรู้เกี่ยวกับสิ่งแวดล้อม ทางประวัติศาสตร์ช่วยสร้างแรงบันดาลใจให้แก่ทั้งครูและนักเรียน
Dr. Sheldon Shaeffer ผู้อำนวยการองค์การ UNESCO ประจำกรุงเทพฯ กล่าวว่า “ศิลปะ แขนงต่างๆ มีบทบาทที่เด่นชัดและมีเอกลักษณ์ในการนำแนวคิดเรื่องการศึกษาที่มีคุณภาพมาปฏิบัติจริง และในฐานะที่เป็นสื่อในการสร้างสรรค์ ศิลปะยังกระตุ้นการพัฒนากระบวนการการคิดและการเรียนรู้ ก่อให้เกิดความคิดและการสร้างสรรค์ในเชิงนวัตกรรม ตลอดจนชี้ให้เห็นถึงความสำคัญของความหลากหลาย ทางวัฒนธรรม และ สนับสนุนรูปแบบพฤติกรรมที่สร้างการยอมรับพฤติกรรมและความเชื่อทางสังคม ที่แตกต่างจากตนเอง (Social Tolerance)”
ศิลปะทุกสาขาสามารถนำมาใช้ในกระบวนการการเรียนรู้ได้ อาทิ ทัศนศิลป์ ศิลปะงานพลาสติก และ นาฏศิลป์ นอกจากนี้ ครูในเอเชียยังร่วมกันนำนฤมิตศิลป์มาใช้ในการจัดทำวัสดุอุปกรณ์ที่ใช้ในการเรียน- การสอนเกี่ยวกับการศึกษามรดกโลกอีกด้วย
รายงานเรื่องมรดกโลกในมือเยาวชนเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ได้บรรจุแบบกิจกรรมเกี่ยวกับการศึกษา ศิลปะไว้ 7 หน้า ให้ใช้เป็นแนวทางสำหรับกิจกรรมต่างๆ ในชั้นเรียน ทั้งนี้ เพื่อกระตุ้นให้นักเรียนเรียนรู้ ประวัติศาสตร์ดวยการศึกษาและวาดภาพงานแกะสลักบนแผ่นศิลา หรือ ฝึกหัดการทำหัตกรรมโบราณ อาทิ การปั้นหม้อในท้องถิ่น โดยให้เรียนรู้จากช่างฝีมือเก่าๆ และฝึกลงมือทำด้วยตัวเอง 
เมื่อเร็วๆ นี้ ผู้แทนของไทยจากกระทรวงวัฒนธรรม กระทรวงศึกษาธิการ และ กระทรวงทรัพยากร และสิ่งแวดล้อม ก็ได้เข้าร่วมการประชุมระดมสมองที่องค์การ UNESCO จัดให้มีขึ้น เพื่อให้ประเทศไทย นำเอาวิธีการเรียนรู้อย่างสร้างสรรค์นี้ไปใช้ในการศึกษาเกี่ยวกับมรดกโลก โดยในขั้นแรก ผู้เชี่ยวชาญ ของไทยเป็นผู้ระบุความต้องการในการฝึกอบรมครู
นอกจากนี้ องค์การ UNESCO ยังได้เสนอให้จัดการแข่งขันของนักเรียนในการจัดทำภาพการ์ตูน ที่เคลื่อนไหวได้เป็นแผ่นป้ายซึ่งเขียนเรียบเรียงฉากหรือเรื่องราวที่จะถ่ายทำ (Animation Storyboards) เกี่ยวกับมรดกโลก เนื่องจากเล็งเห็นว่าการแข่งขันของนักเรียนเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของความพยายามขององค์การ UNESCO ในการพัฒนาสื่อที่สร้างสรรค์เกี่ยวกับแหล่งมรดกโลก
