1. พื้นที่สามเหลี่ยมปากแม่น้ำเก่า (Old delta) ครอบคลุมพื้นที่จังหวัดชัยนาท สิงห์บุรี สุพรรณบุรี ลพบุรี อ่างทอง และ พระนครศรีอยุธยา มีพื้นที่ประมาณ 3.6 ล้านไร่ เกิดจากการทับถมของตะกอนที่พัดพาโดยแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา และ แม่น้ำสุพรรณบุรี สูงจากระดับน้ำทะเล 15 เมตรโดยประมาณที่จังหวัดชัยนาท แล้วลาดเทลงมาทางใต้ จนถึงจังหวัดพระนครศรีอยุธยา มีความสูงจากระดับน้ำทะเลประมาณ 5 เมตร เป็นดินนาชั้นดี และไม่เป็นกรด
2. พื้นที่ราบลุ่มใหม่ (New delta) ครอบคลุมพื้นที่จังหวัดพระนครศรีอยุธยา เรื่อยลงมาถึงชายทะเลอ่าวไทย มีพื้นที่ประมาณ 8.3 ล้านไร่ ประกอบด้วยพื้นที่ 2 ลักษณะ คือ พื้นที่ที่เกิดจากตะกอนน้ำทะเล (Deltaic high) มีแร่ไพไรท์ไม่เกิน 0.8 % จึงไม่เป็นดินกรดจัด เป็นที่ตั้งของกรุงเทพฯ ห่างไปทางทิศตะวันตกและตะวันออก ขนานกับแนวชายฝั่งอ่าวไทยซึ่งสูงจากระดับน้ำทะเล 3-5 เมตร และพื้นที่ราบลุ่มโดยรอบ (Delta flat) ซึ่งสูงจากระดับน้ำทะเล 1-2 เมตร เกิดจากตะกอนน้ำกร่อย มีแร่ไพไรท์ค่อนข้างสูง เมื่อมีการยกระดับให้สูงขึ้น มีการระบายน้ำและถ่ายเทอากาศดี ดินจะมีคุณสมบัติเป็นดินกรดจัด
