ประวัติความเป็นมาของหมู่บ้าน
งานแกะสลักไม้ของหมู่บ้านกิ่วแลน้อยได้รับการสืบทอดจากรุ่นสู่รุ่นมาเกือบหกทศวรรษ จากช่างฝีมือด้านการแกะสลัก คือ พ่อบุญมี ท้าวปินตา ท่านมีบ้านเดิมอยู่ที่ตัวเมืองจังหวัดเชียงใหม่ ต่อมาประมาณ พ.ศ. 2497 พ่อบุญมีได้ย้ายมาสร้างครอบครัวและตั้งถิ่นฐานอยู่ที่หมู่บ้านกิ่วแลน้อย ในสมัยนั้นหมู่บ้านกิ่วแลน้อยเป็นหมู่บ้านที่ทุรกันดาร การคมนาคมไม่สะดวก พ่อบุญมีไม่มีทรัพย์สมบัติใดนอกจากความรู้ที่ตนเองได้เรียนรู้สืบทอดวิชามาจากบิดามารดา นั่นคือ การแกะสลักช้าง ท่านจึงได้คิดริเริ่มประกอบอาชีพแกะสลักช้างเพื่อหารายได้เลี้ยงครอบครัว จากความวิริยะ อุตสาหะของพ่อบุญมี ทำให้ฐานะความเป็นอยู่ของครอบครัวมั่นคงเป็นปึกแผ่น 
 
ในปี พ.ศ. 2515 ร้านนารายณ์ภัณฑ์และห้างเซ็นทรัล กรุงเทพมหานครจากกระทรวงอุตสาหกรรมได้มาติดต่อซื้อขายงานฝีมือแกะสลักของพ่อบุญมีและท่านได้ส่งผลิตภัณฑ์ไม้แกะสลักรูปช้างเข้าประกวด ฝีมืองานหัตถกรรมอันประณีตของท่าน ทำให้ได้รับรางวัลชนะเลิศเหรียญทองพร้อมเกียรติบัตร รางวัลในครั้งนี้ทำให้งานแกะสลักไม้ของพ่อบุญมีได้รับความนิยมมากขึ้น ญาติพี่น้องบ้านใกล้เรือนเคียงรวมถึงชาวบ้านในชุมชนกิ่วแลน้อยต่างก็มาเรียนการแกะสลักจากพ่อบุญมี ความสำเร็จในขึ้นแรกนี้จึงเป็นกำลังใจครั้งสำคัญที่ผลักดันให้พ่อบุญมีมุ่งมั่นถ่ายทอดภูมิปัญญาในการแกะสลักไม้ให้กับบรรดาลูกศิษย์ต่างๆ เพื่อให้มีอาชีพสร้างรายได้จุนเจือครอบครัว และมีความเป็นอยู่ที่ดีขึ้น 
 
ต่อมา พ่อคำปัน ทองต้น ซึ่งเป็นผู้ใหญ่บ้านในขณะนั้น เห็นว่าชาวบ้านบางส่วนยังไม่มีอาชีพเป็นหลักแหล่ง บ้างก็รับจ้างทำไร่ทำนา บ้างก็รับจ้างในชุมชนที่ห่างไกลออกไป พ่อคำปันเห็นว่าการแกะสลักไม้สามารถสร้างรายได้ดีให้แก่หมู่บ้านและช่วยให้ชาวบ้านมีอาชีพและมีความเป็นอยู่ดีขึ้นได้ จึงติดต่อ พ่อครูตา ธรรมรังสี ซึ่งเป็นญาติกับพ่อคำปัน เดิมเป็นคนกิ่วแลน้อยแต่ไปแต่งงานและตั้งรกรากอยู่ที่อำเภอฝางให้กลับมาช่วยอนุรักษ์ภูมิปัญญาของบิดามารดา โดยการถ่ายทอดความรู้เกี่ยวกับงานช่างไม้แกะสลักให้กับคนในหมู่บ้าน เริ่มแรกนั้นมีพ่อครู 2 คนที่เริ่มสอนการแกะสลักลายไทยลงบนแผ่นไม้ คือพ่อครูใจ๋ มโนแก้ว และพ่อครูตา ธรรมรังสี ครูช่างทั้งสองคนนี้มีความเชี่ยวชาญในเรื่องการแกะสลักลายไทย วิถีชีวิตชนบท ช้างลากซุง ภาพวิวป่าต่าง ๆ 
 
นอกจากพ่อครูทั้งสองแล้ว ยังมีพ่อหนานธงชัย กิ่วแก้ว ที่มีความเชี่ยวชาญและเป็นพ่อครูสอนการแกะสลักไม้ในด้านลายพุทธประวัติและวรรณคดี คุณแม่บัวเกี๋ยง กิ่วแก้ว เล่าว่า พ่อหนานธงชัยเดิมเคยบวชเป็นพระมาก่อนและได้เริ่มฝึกการแกะสลักไม้จากฝาตู้หรือไม้เก่า โดยเริ่มฝึกแกะสลักไม้เป็นลายพุทธประวัติ ต่อมาจึงสึกจากการบวชพระมาเริ่มต้นอาชีพแกะสลักไม้และพัฒนาฝีมือจนมีความเชี่ยวชาญในการแกะสลักลายวรรณคดี รามเกียรติ์ พุทธประวัติต่างๆ ต่อมาในปี 2510 ได้แต่งงานกับคุณแม่บัวเกี๋ยง ซึ่งเดิมเป็นคนอำเภอแม่วาง จากนั้นพ่อหนานธงชัยก็ได้เริ่มถ่ายทอดการแกะสลักไม้ลายพุทธประวัติและวรรณคดีต่างๆให้แก่คุณแม่บัวเกี๋ยงและมีลูกศิษย์อีกประมาณ 10 คน เช่น คุณเดช สถานมูลคำ คุณสนิทและคุณสนอม มะลิกุล คุณดวงทิพย์ คำเมือง รวมถึงคุณเจน นวลสุภา หนึ่งในช่างไม้แกะสลักที่มีชื่อเสียงในปัจจุบัน 
 
จนกระทั่งในปีพ.ศ. 2545 ท่านนายอำเภอภุชงค์ โพธิกุฎสัย และคุณแม่ศิวพร ทองจ่าม ประธานสหกรณ์ในขณะนั้น ร่วมกับหน่วยราชการส่งเสริมให้มีการอนุรักษ์ภูมิปัญญาด้านการแกะสลักไม้และหัตถกรรม ผลักดันให้ผลิตภัณฑ์ไม้แกะสลักนี้เป็นผลิตภัณฑ์ที่ได้มาตรฐานสู่สากล จนกระทั่งงานแกะสลักไม้ของหมู่บ้านกิ่วแลน้อยได้รับเลือกให้เป็นผลิตภัณฑ์ หนึ่งตำบลหนึ่งผลิตภัณฑ์ (OTOP) และเป็นผลิตภัณฑ์อันดับหนึ่งของอำเภอสันป่าตอง ได้รับตราสัญลักษณ์เชียงใหม่แบรนด์ จากสำนักงานพาณิชย์จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ ต่อมาหมู่บ้านกิ่วแลน้อยก็ได้รับเลือกให้เป็นหมู่บ้านหัตถกรรมเพื่อการท่องเที่ยว หรือ หมู่บ้านต้นแบบ OTOP ในปีพ.ศ. 2548 เพื่อเป็นศูนย์ข้อมูลและแสดงผลิตภัณฑ์ 
 
ภูมิปัญญาการแกะสลักไม้ของหมู่บ้านกิ่วแลน้อยมีทั้งหมด 3 แขนงด้วยกัน เริ่มแรกนั้นคือการแกะสลักช้าง ต่อมาด้วยการแกะสลักแผ่นไม้ลายไทยและวิถีชีวิตชนบท ต่อด้วยการแกะสลักภาพพุทธประวัติและวรรณคดีต่างๆ ซึ่งได้รับการถ่ายทอดภูมิปัญญากันมารุ่นสู่รุ่น ลูกศิษย์ต่างร่ำเรียนและกลับไปยึดอาชีพการแกะสลักที่บ้านของตนเอง ทำให้ภูมิปัญญาการแกะสลักกระจายไปทั่วอำเภอสันป่าตอง ปัจจุบันหมู่บ้านกิ่วแลน้อยถือเป็นหมู่บ้านต้นแบบในการแกะสลักไม้ เป็นที่ตั้งของศูนย์หัตถกรรมการแกะสลักไม้แห่งอำเภอสันป่าตอง ภายในหมู่บ้านยังคงมีการแกะสลักไม้กันทุกวันและยังเป็นศูนย์รวมของครูช่างมากมาย ซึ่งครูช่างก็จะสาธิตและสอนการแกะสลักให้นักท่องเที่ยวและผู้ที่สนใจด้วย
