การที่สมเด็จพระเจ้าตากสินทรงกู้เอกร

การที่สมเด็จพระเจ้าตากสินทรงกู้เอกราชกรุงศรีอยุธยากลับคืนจากพม่าได้นั้นทำให้กิตติศัพท์เลื่องลือไปทั่ว พระเกียรติยศของพระองค์จึงแพร่ไปว่าเป็นผู้สามารถกู้แผ่นดินไทยให้พ้นจากอำนาจพม่าข้าศึกได้ ทำให้ไพร่บ้านพลเมืองที่ยังหลบลี้อยู่ตามที่ต่างๆ พากันมาอ่อนน้อมเข้าร่วมกับสมเด็จพระเจ้าตากสินเป็นจำนวนมาก ซึ่งจะเป็นกำลังในการศึกสงครามและการบูรณะบ้านเมืองต่อไป พระราชกรณียกิจที่สำคัญ ดังนี้

จากผลของการเสียกรุงศรีอยุธยาครั้งที่สอง ทำให้อาณาจักรอยุธยาไม่อาจกลับมาตั้งใหม่เป็นอาณาจักรของคนไทยได้อีก ทั้งยังเกิดปัญหาด้านเศรษฐกิจและความปลอดภัยในชีวิตตามมา ซึ่งตามทัศนะของนิธิ เอียวศรีวงศ์นั้น ได้อธิบายว่า มีการรวมกลุ่มของประชาชนขึ้นด้วยวัตถุประสงค์แตกต่างกัน แต่สำคัญคือเพื่อเอาชีวิตรอด นอกจากนี้กลุ่มการเมืองหรือ "ชุมนุม" ขนาดใหญ่ ๆ นั้นยังแตกออกเป็น 4-6 ก๊กใหญ่ แต่ไม่มีก๊กใดเลยที่คิดจะกอบกู้เอกราชหรือฟื้นฟูชาติกลับคืนมาดังเดิม

ครั้นพระเจ้ามังระทราบข่าวว่ามีคนไทยตั้งตนเป็นใหญ่อีกครั้ง จึงได้มีพระราชโองการให้เจ้าเมืองทวาย ยกทัพมาปราบปราม[50] กองทัพพม่ายกมาถึงอำเภอบางกุ้ง ซึ่งตั้งอยู่ทางทิศตะวันตกของกรุงธนบุรี มีกำลังตามพระราชพงศาวดาร 2,000 คน สมเด็จพระเจ้ากรุงธนบุรีเสด็จนำกองทัพออกตีพม่าจนแตกพ่าย กิตติศัพท์ที่ทรงรบชนะทำให้พระราชอำนาจทางการเมืองในภาคกลางยิ่งเข้มแข็งยิ่งขึ้น[51]

ราวปี พ.ศ. 2311 สมเด็จพระเจ้ากรุงธนบุรีทรงเริ่มจากยกทัพไปตีชุมนุมพิษณุโลกเป็นก๊กแรก แต่กระสุนปืนต้องถูกพระองค์ จึงต้องยกทัพกลับและรักษาพระองค์ยังพระนคร ชุมนุมพิษณุโลกนี้ภายหลังอ่อนแอลงจนกระทั่งถูกชุมนุมเจ้าพระฝางผนวกไป หลังหายจากพระอาการประชวรแล้ว สมเด็จพระเจ้ากรุงธนบุรีได้ทรงใช้เวลาในการปราบปรามชุมนุมอื่น ๆ เพื่อรวบรวมแผ่นดินให้เป็นปึกแผ่นต่อไป โดยเริ่มจากชุมนุมเจ้าพิมาย กรมหมื่นเทพพิพิธทรงถูกปราบปรามและถูกสำเร็จโทษในปี พ.ศ. 2311[52] ตามด้วยชุมนุมเจ้านครศรีธรรมราช ซึ่งพระปลัดผู้รั้งเมืองนครศรีธรรมราชได้ตั้งตัวเองขึ้นเป็นเจ้า[53] เจ้านครศรีธรรมราชสู้ไม่ได้หนีต่อลงไปยังหัวเมืองทางใต้ พระยาปัตตานีกลัวก็จับตัวมาส่งให้สมเด็จพระเจ้ากรุงธนบุรี[54] ในปี พ.ศ. 2313 สมเด็จพระเจ้ากรุงธนบุรีทรงยกทัพไปตีชุมนุมเจ้าพระฝาง ในหัวเมืองฝ่ายเหนือ โดยยึดได้เมืองพิษณุโลก และก๊กเจ้าพระฝางเมืองสวางคบุรี รบกันได้เพียง 3 วัน เจ้าพระฝางก็แตกหนี[54] เมื่อทรงปราบปรามชุมนุมต่าง ๆ ลงอย่างราบคาบแล้ว รัฐบาลจีนก็เริ่มให้การยอมรับสถานะพระมหากษัตริย์ของพระองค์อย่างเป็นทางการ[55]

สงครามป้องกันประเทศ
ในปี พ.ศ. 2312 เจ้านายเขมรได้เกิดวิวาทกัน คือ นักองตนไปขอกองทัพญวณมาตีเขมร และนักองนนท์สู้มิได้ก็พาครอบครัวหนีมาพึ่งพระบรมโพธิสมภาร ณ กรุงธนบุรี จึงทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้พระยาอภัยรณฤทธิ์กับพระยาอนุชิตราชา (ตอนนี้เป็นตอนต้นรัชกาล สมเด็จเจ้าพระยามหากษัตริย์ศึกยังมียศศักดิ์เพียงพระยาอภัยรณฤทธิ์) ยกทัพไปตีเขมรและทำการโจมตีได้เมืองเสียมราฐแล้วพักรอฤดูฝนอยู่ พอดีได้ข่าวว่าสมเด็จพระเจ้าตากสินมหาราชยกทัพไปตีเมืองนครศรีธรรมราช แล้วสิ้นพระชนม์ลง การตีเขมรครั้งนั้นจึงยังไม่เสร็จ

เมื่อชุมนุมเจ้าพระฝางถูกตีแตก อภัยคามณี โปมะยุง่วน เจ้าเมืองเชียงใหม่ที่พม่าตั้งขึ้น เห็นเป็นโอกาสจะแผ่อาณาเขตลงมา จึงยกทัพลงมาล้อมสวรรคโลกไว้เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2313 แม่ทัพธนบุรีรักษาเมืองไว้มั่นคง ครั้นกองทัพธนบุรีที่ยกมาช่วยเหลือ พอถึงก็เข้าตีกระหนาบพ่ายกลับไป ฝ่ายสมเด็จพระเจ้ากรุงธนบุรีเห็นสบโอกาส ก็ยกทัพขึ้นไปจะตีเอาเมืองเชียงใหม่บ้าง แต่ล้อมได้เพียงเก้าวันก็ต้องยกถอยกลับลงมา

ระหว่างที่สมเด็จพระเจ้ากรุงธนบุรียกขึ้นไปตีเมืองเชียงใหม่นั้น ฝ่ายสมเด็จพระนารายณ์ราชา พระเจ้ากรุงกัมพูชา ได้ฉวยโอกาสยกทัพมาตีเมืองตราดและจันทรบูร แต่ถูกตีแตกกลับไป พอสมเด็จพระเจ้ากรุงธนบุรีทรงทราบก็ขัดเคือง หลังจากพักรี้พลพอสมควรแล้วก็ทรงเตรียมทัพจะไปตีกัมพูชา สามารถเข้าไปจนถึงเมืองบันทายเพชร ราชธานีกรุงกัมพูชา สมเด็จพระนารายณ์ราชาเห็นว่าสู้ไม่ได้ก็หนีไปพึ่งญวน สมเด็จพระเจ้ากรุงธนบุรีทรงตั้งให้พระรามราชาเป็นพระมหากษัตริย์กัมพูชาต่อไป แล้วเลิกทัพกลับเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2314 แต่ต่อมาญวนเกิดกบฏไตเซิน สมเด็จพระนารายณ์ราชาขาดกำลังสนับสนุน ก็กลับมาสวามิภักดิ์ต่อสมเด็จพระเจ้ากรุงธนบุรี พระองค์ก็ทรงให้เป็นมหาอุปโยราช มีฐานะรองจากพระรามราชา[54]

ในปี พ.ศ. 2314 นักองตนซึ่งครองเขมรอยู่ได้ข่าวพม่ายกมาตีไทย จึงถือโอกาสยกทัพมาตีเมืองจันทบุรีและตราด จึงทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้เจ้าพระยาจักรียกทัพไปตีเขมร ทัพไทยตีได้เมืองโพธิสัตว์ เมืองพระตะบอง เมืองบริบูรณ์ เมืองกำพงโสม และเมืองบันทายมาศ นักองตนพ่ายแพ้หนีไปอยู่กับญวณ จึงทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้นักองนนท์ครองเขมรสืบไป

ในปีเดียวกันนี้ ได้เกิดวิวาทกันในหมู่เจ้าเมืองแคว้นกรุงศรีสัตนาคนหุต ฝ่ายหนึ่งสู้ไม่ได้ก็ขอกำลังพม่ามาช่วย พอปราบปรามสำเร็จแล้ว แม่ทัพพม่าก็ยกทัพมาตั้งที่เชียงใหม่ เมื่กองทัพยกผ่านเมืองน่านก็แบ่งกำลังให้นายทัพหน้าตีเมืองบางส่วนของธนุบรี ลึกเข้าไปถึงพิชัย ปลายปี พ.ศ. 2315 เจ้าเมืองพิชัยป้องกันเมืองไว้มั่นคงแล้วก็ขอกำลังพิษณุโลกไปช่วย พอมาถึงก็ออกตีกระหนาบ กองทัพพม่าเป็นฝ่ายแตกกลับไป ในปี พ.ศ. 2316 ได้เกิดเหตุการณ์ลักษณะคล้ายกัน และพม่ายกเข้ามาตีเมืองพิชัยอีกครั้งหนึ่ง แม่ทัพธนบุรีตั้งซุ่มสกัดข้าศึกตรงบริเวณชัยภูมิ พอมาถึงก็ตีทัพพม่าแตกกลับไป การรบครั้งนี้เองที่เกิดวีรกรรม พระยาพิชัยดาบหัก[54]

พม่ากับมอญเกิดรบกัน สมเด็จพระเจ้ากรุงธนบุรีโปรดให้ยกทัพไปตีเชียงใหม่อีกครั้ง ได้พระยาจ่าบ้านกับพระยากาวิละเข้ามาสวามิภักดิ์ เมื่อยกไปถึงเชียงใหม่แล้วก็ตั้งค่ายล้อมไว้ เมื่อทัพหลวงของสมเด็จพระเจ้ากรุงธนบุรีซึ่งเดิมตั้งคอยรับชาวมอญที่เมืองตากมาถึงเชียงใหม่แล้ว ทัพธนบุรีก็ระดมตีค่ายพม่า จนโปมะยุง่วนต้องทิ้งเมืองหนี เสร็จสิ้นในปี พ.ศ. 2317 เชียงใหม่ ลำพูน ลำปาง น่านและแพร่ก็ปลอดจากพม่าตั้งนั้บแต่นั้น[54]
