มีการตั้งถิ่นฐานในจังหวัดศรีสะเกษมาแต่สมัยก่อนประวัติศาสตร์ จนเกิดพัฒนาการที่เข้มข้นในสมัยอาณาจักรขอมซึ่งได้ทิ้งมรดกทางวัฒนธรรมหลายประการไว้ เช่น ปราสาทหินและปรางค์กู่ศิลปะขอมตั้งกระจัดกระจายอยู่หลายแห่ง ครั้นในสมัยอาณาจักรอยุธยา มีการยกบ้านปราสาทสี่เหลี่ยมโคกลำดวน(บริเวณใกลๆปราสาทกุด หรือปราสาทสี่เหลียมโคกลำดวน วัดเจ็ก อำเภอขุขันธ์ ในปัจจุบัน) เป็นเมืองขุขันธ์ [6][9][10] และในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 แห่งอาณาจักรรัตนโกสินทร์ได้ย้ายเมืองไปยังบริเวณตำบลเมืองเก่า (ตำบลเมืองเหนือ อำเภอเมืองศรีสะเกษ ในปัจจุบัน) แต่เรียกชื่อเมืองขุขันธ์ ตามเดิม กระทั่งยกฐานะเป็น จังหวัดขุขันธ์ เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2459 แล้วเปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น จังหวัดศรีสะเกษ เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2481 [4]
