31 พฤษภาคม ของทุกปีถูกกำหนดให้เป็นวันงดสูบบุหรี่โลก ที่ผ่านมาองค์การอนามัยโลกได้ตั้งคำขวัญเพื่อประชาสัมพันธ์ให้คน ตระหนักถึงพิษภัยของบุหรี่ไว้อย่างหลากหลาย เปิดบ้านสถิติฉบับนี้ จึงจะชวนคุยเกี่ยวกับ การสูบบุหรี่ของคนไทย สถานการณ์การสูบบุหรี่ในอดีตจนถึงปัจจุบัน และความสูญเสียที่เกิดจากการสูบบุหรี่ว่าเป็นอย่างไร


นายวิบูลย์ทัต สุทันธนกิตติ์ ผู้อำนวยการสำนักงานสถิติแห่งชาติ เปิดเผยว่า สำนักงานสถิติแห่งชาติติดตามสถานการณ์การสูบบุหรี่และดื่มสุราของคนไทยอย่าง ต่อเนื่องจาก การสำรวจการสูบบุหรี่และดื่มสุราของประชากร ซึ่งจัดทำทุกๆ 3 ปี ตัวเลขล่าสุดในปี 2554 แสดงให้เห็นว่า แม้คนส่วนใหญ่จะรู้ถึงพิษภัยจากการสูบบุหรี่ แต่ก็ยังคงสูบบุหรี่อยู่ไม่น้อยทีเดียว คือ 21 คนจาก 100 คน หรือ 1 ใน 5 ของประชากรที่มีอายุ 15 ปีขึ้นไป และแม้ว่าอัตราดังกล่าวจะลดลงเล็กน้อยหากเทียบกับเมื่อ 6 ปีที่แล้ว
