ในปัจจุบันมีการใช้ภาษาอังกฤษอย่างแพร่หลายทั่วโลก คาชรู (Kachru,1992) กล่าวว่าผู้ใช้ภาษาอังกฤษทั่วโลกมีประมาณ 750 ล้านคน มีผู้ที่มีภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาแม่ประมาณ 350 ล้านคน และ 400 ล้านคนเป็นผู้ที่ไม่ได้พูดภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาแม่ จะเห็นได้ว่าภาษาอังกฤษมีความสำคัญต่อการสื่อสารไม่เพียงแค่เฉพาะในกลุ่มผู้ที่รู้ภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาแม่เท่านั้น แต่ภาษาอังกฤษยังใช้เป็นภาษากลางในการติดต่อสื่อสารระหว่างประเทศที่ไม่ได้ใช้ภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาแม่เกือบทั่วโลก รวมทั้งประเทศไทยด้วยเช่นกัน
