จังหวัดลำปาง ตั้งอยู่ภาคเหนือตอนบนของประเทศไทย ห่างจากกรุงเทพฯ ตามทางหลวงแผ่นดินสายพหลโยธิน ประมาณ 602 กม. ตามทางรถไฟประมาณ 625 กม. มีเนื้อที่ประมาณ 12,533.961 ตร.กม. หรือประมาณ 7,833,726 ไร่ มีพื้นที่ใหญ่เป็นอันดับ 5 ของภาคเหนือ รองจากเชียงใหม่ ตาก แม่ฮ่องสอน และเพชรบูรณ์
อาณาเขตติดต่อกับจังหวัดข้างเคียงถึง 7 จังหวัด ดังนี้
• ทิศเหนือ ติดต่อกับ จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ เชียงราย และพะเยา
• ทิศใต้ ติดต่อกับ จังหวัดตาก
• ทิศตะวันออก ติดต่อกับจังหวัดแพร่ และสุโขทัย
• ทิศตะวันตก ติดต่อกับจังหวัดลำพูน
2. สภาพภูมิประเทศ
จังหวัดลำปาง อยู่สูงจากระดับน้ำทะเล 268.80 เมตร พื้นที่มีลักษณะเป็นรูปยาวรี ภูมิประเทศโดยทั่วไปเป็นที่ราบสูง มีภูเขาสูงอยู่ทั่วไป ทอดตัวยาวตามแนวทิศเหนือไปทางทิศใต้ของจังหวัด และในบริเวณตอนกลางของจังหวัดบางส่วนมีที่ราบลุ่มริมฝั่งแม่น้ำ และตามลักษณะทางกายภาพทางด้านธรณีสัณฐานวิทยา จังหวัดลำปางมีพื้นที่เป็นที่ราบล้อมรอบด้วยภูเขา มีลักษณะเป็นแอ่งแผ่นดินที่ยาวและกว้างที่สุดในภาคเหนือ เรียกว่า “ อ่างลำปาง ” ลักษณะภูมิประเทศแบ่งออกเป็น 3 ลักษณะ คือ
1. บริเวณตอนบนของจังหวัด เป็นที่ราบสูง ภูเขา และเป็นป่าค่อนข้างทึบ อุดมสมบูรณ์ด้วยไม้มีค่า ได้แก่ พื้นที่อำเภอเมืองปาน แจ้ห่ม วังเหนือ และงาว
2. บริเวณตอนกลางของจังหวัด เป็นที่ราบและที่ราบลุ่มริมฝั่งแม่น้ำ ซึ่งเป็นแหล่งเกษตรกรรมที่สำคัญของจังหวัด ได้แก่ พื้นที่อำเภอห้างฉัตร เมืองลำปาง เกาะคา แม่ทะ และสบปราบ
3. บริเวณตอนใต้ของจังหวัด เป็นป่าไม้รัง บางส่วนเป็นทุ่งหญ้า ได้แก่ พื้นที่อำเภอเถิน แม่พริก บางส่วนของอำเภอเสริมงาม และแม่ทะ
