งานประเพณีแห่เทียนพรรษา เป็นประเพณีทางพุทธศาสนา มีความเจริญในพุทธศาสนา วัฒนธรรม และประเพณีมาเป็นเวลายาวนาน โดยได้กำหนดจัดงานขึ้นในวันขึ้น 15 ค่ำเดือน 8 และแรม 1 ค่ำเดือน 8 หรือวันอาสาฬหบูชาและวันเข้าพรรษา
ชาวอุบลราชธานี ได้ทำต้นเทียนประกวดประชันความวิจิตรบรรจงกัน ตั้งแต่ พ.ศ.2470 จนเมื่อปี พ.ศ.2520 จังหวัดอุบลราชธานี ได้จัดงานสัปดาห์ประเพณีแห่เทียนพรรษา ให้เป็นงานประเพณีที่ยิ่งใหญ่และมโหฬาร สถานที่จัดงานคือ บริเวณทุ่งศรีเมืองและศาลาจตุรมุข มีการประกวดต้นเทียน 2 ประเภท คือ ประเภทติดพิมพ์ และประเภทแกะสลัก โดยขบวนแห่จากคุ้มวัดต่างๆ พร้อมนางฟ้าประจำต้นเทียน จะเคลื่อนขบวนจาก หน้าวัดศรีอุบลรัตนาราม ไปตามถนน มาสิ้นสุดขบวนที่ทุ่งศรีเมือง และการแสดงสมโภชต้นเทียน แลเป็นแสงไฟต้องลำเทียนงามอร่ามไปทั้งงาน ซึ่งตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ.2542 เป็นต้นมา
