แนวคิด ทฤษฏี เกี่ยวกับสิ่งแวดล้อมและปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อมเกี่ยวกับทรัพยากรน้ำ
ความหมายของสิ่งแวดล้อมได้มีผู้ให้คำจำกัดความของคำว่าสิ่งแวดล้อมไว้หลายประการ เช่น
เกษม จันทร์แก้ว (2524 : 3) ให้ความหมายว่า สิ่งแวดล้อมนั้นเป็นทุกสิ่งทุกอย่างบนพื้นโลก เป็นทั้งของแข็ง, ของเหลว, ก๊าซ, สารเคมี, สัตว์, มนุษย์, ดิน, หิน, แร่, อากาศ, สิ่งก่อสร้าง, บ้านเรือน, ถนน, โรงเรียน, ชุมชน, ศาสนา, ประเพณี, กฎหมาย, ข้อบังคับ, และอื่นๆ
คณะกรรมการสิ่งแวดล้อม (2540 : 15) ให้ความหมายว่า สิ่งแวดล้อมคือทุกสิ่งทุกอย่างที่อยู่รอบตัวเรา ทั้งที่มีชีวิตและไม่มีชีวิต ทั้งที่เป็นรูปธรรมและนามธรรม มีอิทธิพลเกี่ยวโยงถึงกัน เป็นปัจจัยในการเกื้อหนุนซึ่งกันและกัน ผลกระทบจากปัจจัยหนึ่ง จะมีส่วนส่งเสริมหรือทำลายอีกส่วนหนึ่งอย่างหลีกเลี่ยงไม่ได้ สิ่งแวดล้อมเป็นวงจรและวัฎจักรที่เกี่ยวข้องกันทั้งระบบ
ปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อม
ศุภวิทย์ เปี่ยมพงศ์สานต์ (2530 : 9) ได้ให้ความหมายของปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อม พอสรุปได้ว่า ปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อมเป็นปัญหาเสื่อมโทรม ของคุณภาพสิ่งแวดล้อม อันได้แก่ ดินเสีย อากาศเสีย เสียงรบกวนและเกินสารพิษ ซึ่งเกิดจาดเกษตรกรรม และอุตสาหกรรม จนเกิดปัญหามลพิษ รวมถึงปัญหาอันเกิดจากการนำเอาทรัพยากรพวกแร่ธาตุ ป่าไม้ สัตว์ และพืชต่างๆ มาใช้อย่างขาดความไม่ระมัดระวัง
จากปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อมที่กล่าวมาข้างต้นพอสรุปได้ว่า ปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อมหมายถึง ปัญหาความเสื่อมโทรมของสภาพแวดล้อม อันได้แก่ ดินเสีย น้ำเสีย อากาศเสีย เสียงรบกวน เกิดสารพิษและการร่อยหรอของทรัพยากรธรรมชาติ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นแร่ธาตุ ป่าไม้ สัตว์ ปละพืช อันเกิดจากการกระทำของมนุษย์ ที่ใช้ทรัพยากรอย่างไม่ประหยัด และขาดความรับผิดชอบ
สาเหตุของปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อม
คณะกรรมการสิ่งแวดล้อมแห่งชาติ (2540 : 18) ได้อธิบายว่า สาเหตุหลักของปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อม มี 2 ประการ คือ

1. ปัญหามลพิษทางน้ำ มีสาเหตุของปัญหามาจากการที่มนุษย์มีการใช้น้ำ ในลักษณะที่แตกต่างกันไป โดยแบ่งประเภทของน้ำเสียได้ 5 ประเภท คือ
1.1 น้ำเสียจากชุมชน มีสาเหตุมาจากการใช้น้ำต่างๆ ในชีวิตประจำวัน เช่น การชำระล้างร่างกาย การขับถ่าย การปรุงอาหาร การซักล้าง
1.2 น้ำเสียจากอุตสาหกรรม อันเนื่องมาจากโรงงานอุตสาหกรรมประเภทต่างๆที่มีแหล่งกำเนิดน้ำเสียมาจากกระบวนการต่างๆที่เกิดจากกระบวนการผลิต กระบวนการถ่ายเทความร้อน การการศึกษาพบว่าน้ำเสียจากแหล่งดดังกล่าววจะมีปริมาณมาก และชนิดของสารเคมีปนเปื้อนจะแตกต่างกันไปตามประเภทของโรงงานอุตสาหกรรม คือ ปนเปื้อนด้วนสารอินทรีย์ สารอนินทรีย์ หรือสารพิษ
1.3 น้ำเสียจากการเกษตรกรรม กิจกรรมของเกษตรกรที่ก่อให้เกิดปัญหาน้ำเสีย ได้แก่ ฟาร์มสุกร นากุ้ง บ่อเลี้ยงปลา มักปนเปื้อนด้วนสารปราบศัตรูพืช ปุ๋ยเคมี
1.4 น้ำเสียจากสถานที่กำจัดขยะมูลฝอย เกิดจากการทำนำเอาขยะมูลฝอยไปกองทิ้งไว้อย่างไม่ถูกวิธี จะเป็นแหล่งกำเนิดน้ำเสียที่สำคัญ เนื่องจากขยะมูลฝอยประกอบไปด้วยเศษอาหาร ของเน่าเสีย เมื่อฝนตกลงมาก็จะชะล้างพาน้ำเสียไหนปนเปื้อนลงไปกับแหล่งน้ำผิวดิน และซึมลงสู่ใต้ดินด้วย

3. ปัญหามลพิษทางเสียง เกิดขึ้นตามความเจริญก้าวหน้าทางเทคโนโลยี ทั้งในการนำเอาเครื่องจักรกลมาใช้มนโรงงานอุตสาหกรรม การใช้เครื่องยนต์ของยานพาหนะจำนวนมากที่ได้ถอดอุปกรณ์เครื่องลดเสียงของเครื่องยนต์ออก และชอบเร่งเสียงให้ดังขณะขับเคลื่อน
