แรกเริ่มีสมาชิก 5 ประเทศได้แก่ อินโนนีเซีย มาเลเซีย ฟิลิปปินส์สิงคโปร์และไทย
ผู้แทนทั้ง 5 ประเทศได้แก่
- นาย อาดัม มาลิก (รัฐมนตรีต่างประเทศอินโดนีเซีย)
- ตุนอับดุลราชักบินฮุสเซน (รองนายกรัฐมนตรีกลาโหมและรัฐมนตรีกระทรวงพัฒนาการแห่งชาติมาเลเซีย)
- นาย นาซิโซ รามอส (รัฐมนตรีต่างประเทศฟิลิปปินส์)
-นาย เอส ราชารัตนัม (รัฐมนตรีต่างประเทศสิงคโปร์)
-ดร. ถนัด คอมันตร์ (รัฐมนตรีต่างประเทศไทย)

คำขวัญประจำอาเซียน : One Vision , One Ldentity , One Community (หนึ่งวิสัยทัศน์ หนึ่งเอกลักษณ์ หนึ่งประชาคม)

สุญลักษณ์อาเซียน : "ต้นข้าวสีเหลือง 10 ต้นมัดรวมกันไว้" หมายถึง ประเทศทั้ง 10 ในอาเซียนรวมกันสื่อมิตรภาพและความเป็นน้ำหนึ่งใจเดียวกัน

สำนักเลขาธิการอาเซียน ตั้งอยู่ที่ กรงจากาตาร์
เลขาธิการคนปัจจุบันคือ ดร.สุรินทร์ พิศสุวรรณ ดำรงตำแหน่งเมื่อ ปี พ.ศ. 2551
