แก๊สโซฮอล์ เป็นโครงการที่เกิดขึ้นจากแนวพระราชดำริใน พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว มาตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2528 โดยทรงเล็งเห็นว่าประเทศไทยอาจประสบปัญหาขาดแคลนน้ำมัน และปัญหาพืชผลทางการเกษตรมีราคาตกต่ำ จึงทรงมีพระราชดำริให้โครงการส่วนประองค์สวนจิตรลดาได้ศึกษากระบวนการผลิตแอลกอฮอล์จากอ้อย และนำแอลกอฮอล์ที่ผลิตได้นี้มาผสมกับน้ำมันเบนซิน ผลิตเป็นน้ำมัน “แก๊สโซฮอล์” เพื่อใช้เป็นพลังงานทดแทน โดยโครงการส่วนพระองค์ได้เริ่มผลผลิตแอลกอฮอล์จากอ้อยมาตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2529 และได้มีการพัฒนาอย่างต่อเนื่องมาจนถึงทุกวันนี้
