งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาเกี่ยวกับเศรษฐกิจและชนบทของไทย และเพื่อที่จะศึกษา เศรษฐกิจของชนบทไทยในตอนนี้ ในชนบทประกอบอาชีพเป็น เกษตรกรส่วนมากมีทั้งเกษตรกรรวยกับเกษตรกรยากจน
ประเทศไทยเป็นประเทศเกษตรกรรม แต่ดูเหมือนว่าปัญหาต่างๆ ที่เกิดขึ้นในภาคเกษตรกร อาทิเช่น เกษตรกรรมไทย การคงอยู่ของการผลิตแบบยังชีพ ผลผลิตข้าว แนวโน้มที่น่าเป็นห่วง สาเหตุที่การเจริญเติบโตทางเศรษฐกิจสวนทางกับการกระจายรายได้ ตลอดจนปัญหาด้าน ราคาสินค้าเกษตรตกต่ำ ที่เป็นปัญหา
