ประวัติ
สันนิษฐานว่าวัดนี้ได้ริเริ่มสร้างองค์พระมหาธาตุขึ้นในแผ่นดินสมเด็จบรมราชาธิราชที่ ๑
(ขุนหลวงพระงั่ว) แต่อาจจะยังไม่สำเร็จในรัชกาลของพระองค์ จนถึงรัชกาของสมเด็จ
พระราเมศวรจึงทรงสร้างเพิ่มเติมจนเสร็จบริบูรณ์เป็นพระอาราม แล้วขนานนามว่า”วัดมหาธาตุ”

ในสมัยสมเด็จพระเจ้าทรงธรรม (พ.ศ.๒๑๕๓-๒๑๗๑)พระปรางค์เคยพังลงมา
เกือบครึ่งองค์ถึงชั้นครุฑ ต่อมาสมเด็จพระเจ้าปราสาททองทรงบูรณะใหม่
โดยเสริมพระมหาธาตุให้สูงยิ่งขึ้น รวมเป็นความสูง 25 วา ดังปรากฏในพงศาวดารฉบับ
พระราชหัตถเลขาว่า“ศักราช ๙๙๕ (พ.ศ.๒๑๗๖) ปีระกา เบญจศก ทรงพระกรุณาให้สถาปนา
พระปรางค์วัดพระมหาธาตุอันทำลายลง เก่าเดิมในองค์สูง ๑๙ วายอดนภศูลสูง ๓ วาจึงดำรัสว่า
ทรงเก่าล่ำนัก ให้ก่อใหม่ไห้องค์สูงเส้น ๒ วายอดนภศูลคงไว้ เข้ากันเป็นเส้น ๕ วา (๕๐เมตร)
ก่อแล้วเห็นเพรียวอยู่ ให้เอาไว้มะค่ามาแทรก ตามอิฐเอาปูนบวก ๙ เดือนสำเร็จให้กระทำ

ครั้นเมื่อกรุงศรีอยุธยาเสียแก่ข้าศึกครั้งหลังใน พ.ศ.๒๓๑๐ ในคราวนั้นวัดมหาธาตุถูกไฟไหม้
เสียหายมาก พระอุโบสถและวิหาร ตลอดจนกุฏิสงฆ์ถูกเผาผลาญยับเยิน คงเหลือแต่ซากผนัง
และตั้งแต่นั้นเป็นต้นมา วัดมหาธาตุก็ได้กลายเป็นวัดร้าง จนกระทั่งพระยาไชยวิชิต (เผือก)
ผู้รักษาการกรุงศรีอยุธยา ในรัชกาลที่๓ทำการซ่อมวัดหน้าพระเมรุที่ริมครองสระบัวขึ้นใหม่หมด
ทั้งวัด จึงได้เชิญพระพุทธรูปองค์นั่งห้องพระบาทไปประดิษฐานไว้ในวิหารน้อย ซึ่งอยู่ใน
วัดหน้าพระเมรุจนบัดนี้
