ชนิดของคำศัพท์ภาษาอังกฤษ (Parts of Speech)
ปาริชาติ นาคะตะ (2536: 16, 35-36) ได้จำแนกคำออกเป็น 2 ชนิดตามการประกอบคำหรือ
ตามหน้าที่ที่อยู่ในคำคือ หน่วยคำหลัก (base morpheme) และหน่วยคำประกอบ (affix) และแบ่งคำ
ผสมออกเป็น 3 ชนิดใหญ่ๆ คือ คำผสมที่เป็นคำนาม (compound noun) เช่น cable television,
birthcontrol, dog-in-the-manger คำผสมที่เป็นคำคุณศัพท์ (compound adjective) เช่น bloodthirsty,card carrying, see-through และคำผสมที่เป็นคำกริยา (compound verb) เช่น overcome, sky-dive,soft-land
อรมา ประสิทธิ์รัฐสินธุ์ (2546: 20-25) กล่าวว่าชนิดของคำตรงกับภาษาอังกฤษว่า parts of
speech ซึ่งเป็นคำที่มักใช้ในไวยากรณ์ดั้งเดิม และตรงกับคำว่า word classes หรือ forms classes ซึ่ง
เป็นคำที่ใหม่กว่า และริเริ่มใช้โดยนักไวยากรณ์โครงสร้าง ในปัจจุบัน คำว่า parts of speech และ
word classes เป็นที่นิยมใช้เท่าๆ กัน ส่วนคำว่า form classes ไม่ค่อยเป็นที่นิยมนัก ชนิดของคำอาจ
แบ่งออกเป็นสามประเภทใหญ่ๆ ตามเกณฑ์ดังนี้ คือ
1. เกณฑ์ความหมาย แบ่งคำออกเป็น 8 ชนิดคือคำนาม คำสรรพนาม คำกริยา คำคุณศัพท์
คำวิเศษณ์ คำบุพบท คำสันธาน และคำอุทาน
2. เกณฑ์โครงสร้าง จำแนกชนิดของคำออกเป็น 8 ชนิดคือ verb, noun, adjective,
determiner, adverb, preposition, conjunction, sentence particle
3. เกณฑ์หน้าที่ แบ่งคำออกเป็นกลุ่มดังนี้คือ กลุ่มคำนาม (nominals) ได้แก่ noun, adjective,
numeral, determiner กลุ่มคำกริยา (verbals) ได้แก่ verb, preposition และกลุ่มคำกริยาวิเศษณ์
(adverbals) ได้แก่ adverb, conjunction
Wren & Martin (1993:3) ได้แบ่งคำภาษาอังกฤษออกเป็น 8 ชนิดตามที่ใช้ในประโยค คือ
1. คำนาม (Noun) คือคำที่ใช้เป็นชื่อของคน สถานที่และสิ่งของ
2. คำคุณศัพท์ (Adjective) คือคำที่ใช้เพื่อเพิ่มความหมายให้กับคำนาม
3. คำสรรพนา (Pronoun) คือคำที่ใช้แทนคำนาม
4. คำกริยา (Verb) คือคำที่ใช้แสดงถึงการกระทำของคน สถานที่และสิ่งของ
5. คำกริยาวิเศษณ์ (Adverb) คือคำที่ใช้เพิ่มความหมายให้กับคำกริยา คำคุณศัพท์ หรือ
คำกริยาวิเศษณ์ตัวอื่นๆ
6. คำบุพบท (Preposition) คือคำที่ใช้เชื่อมคำนามหรือคำสรรพนามเข้ากับคำอื่นๆ
7. คำสันธาน (Conjunction) คือคำที่เชื่อมคำหรือประโยคเข้าด้วยกัน
8. คำอุทาน (Interjection) คือคำที่แสดงอารมณ์ต่างๆ
