องค์ความรู้หลัก (Core Subjects) ที่

องค์ความรู้หลัก (Core Subjects) ที่มีความสำคัญในการจัดการเรียนรู้ในยุคศตวรรษที่ 21 ประกอบไปด้วย ภาษาอังกฤษในฐานะภาษาแม่ (English) ทักษะการอ่าน (Reading) เพื่อให้เกิดการเรียนรู้และได้รับความรู้ต่างๆ มากมายเพิ่มเติม โดยเชื่อว่าการอ่านเป็นทักษะพื้นฐานในการเรียนรู้สิ่งต่างๆ ทักษะการใช้ภาษาอื่นๆ (Language Arts) ได้แก่ การฟัง การพูด และการเขียน ภาษาต่างประเทศ (World Language) ศิลปะ (Arts) คณิตศาสตร์ (Mathematics) เศรษฐศาสตร์ (Economics) วิทยาศาสตร์ (Science) ภูมิศาสตร์ (Geography) ประวัติศาสตร์ (History) การปกครองและหน้าที่พลเมือง (Government and Civics) สาขาวิชาในกลุ่มสังคมศาสตร์ (Social Science) ดังกล่าวมานี้ แตกต่างจากวิชาสังคมศึกษา (Social Studies) ซึ่งว่าด้วยเรื่องวิถีการดำเนินชีวิต (Way of Life) ของมนุษย์ สิ่งมีชีวิต และสิ่งแวดล้อม

นอกจากนี้ยังมีประเด็นสำคัญในยุคศตวรรษที่ 21 ที่จำเป็นต้องบูรณาการในการจัดการเรียนการสอนโดยถักทอหรือประสานไปพร้อมกับองค์ความรู้หลัก จำแนกออกเป็น 5 ด้าน ได้แก่ 1) ความตระหนักเกี่ยวกับโลก (Global Awareness) 2) ความรู้ความเข้าใจด้านการเงิน เศรษฐกิจ ธุรกิจ และการเป็นผู้ประกอบการ (Financial, Economics, Business and Entrepreneurial Literacy) 3) ความรู้ความเข้าใจเกี่ยวกับหน้าที่พลเมือง (Civic Literacy) 4) ความรู้ความเข้าใจเกี่ยวกับสุขภาพ (Health Literacy) และ 5) ความรู้ความเข้าใจด้านสิ่งแวดล้อม (Environmental Literacy) นอกจากนี้ยังมีทักษะที่ต้องบูรณาการผสานในการเรียนการสอนในองค์ความรู้วิชาหลักควบคู่ไปกับ 5 ประเด็นสำคัญในยุคศตวรรษที่ 21 (ดังกล่าวมานี้) ดังนี้
