(2)ส่งเสริมสันติภาพและความมั่นคงส่วนภูมิภาค
(3)เสริมสร้างความเจริญรุ่งเรืองทางเศรษฐกิจพัฒนาการทางวัฒนธรรมในภูมิภาค
(4)ส่งเสริมให้ประชาชนในอาเซียนมีความเป็นอยู่และคุณภาพชีวิตที่ดี
(5)ให้ความช่วยเหลือซึ่งกันและกัน ในรูปของการฝึกอบรมและการวิจัย และส่งเสริมการศึกษาด้านเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้
(6)เพิ่มประสิทธิภาพของการเกษตรและอุตสาหกรรม การขยายการค้า ตลอดจนการปรับปรุงการขนส่งและการคมนาคม
และ(7)เสริมสร้างความร่วมมืออาเซียนกับประเทศภายนอก องค์การ ความร่วมมือแห่งภูมิภาคอื่นๆ และองค์การระหว่างประเทศ

นับตั้งแต่วันก่อตั้ง อาเซียนได้พยายามแสดงบทบาทในการธำรงรักษาและส่งเสริมสันติภาพ เสถียรภาพ ความมั่นคงและความเจริญร่วมกันในภูมิภาค ตลอดจนมีวิวัฒนาการ อย่างต่อเนื่องในการสร้างความไว้เนื้อเชื่อใจระหว่างประเทศสมาชิก ตลอดจนพัฒนาการในเรื่องความร่วมมือทางเศรษฐกิจและสังคม จนเป็นที่ประจักษ์แก่นานาประเทศ และนำไปสู่การขยายสมาชิกภาพ โดยบรูไนดารุสซาลาม เข้าเป็นสมาชิกลำดับที่ 6เมื่อปี 2527เวียดนาม เข้าเป็นสมาชิกลำดับที่ 7ในปี 2538ลาวและพม่า เข้าเป็นสมาชิกพร้อมกันเมื่อปี 2540และกัมพูชาเข้าเป็นสมาชิกล่าสุดเมื่อปี 2542ทำให้ในปัจจุบันอาเซียนมีสมาชิกรวมทั้งหมด 10ประเทศ
