บริเวณสวนสนนี้ มีเนินเขาเตี้ยๆ ลูกหนึ่ง เรียกว่า “ภูกุ่มข้าว” สูงจากระดับน้ำทะเลปานกลางประมาณ 880 เมตร เป็นเนินเขาที่เป็นจุดเด่นจุดหนึ่งท่ามกลางสวนสน เมื่อขึ้นไปยืนบนเนินเขาภูกุ่มข้าว จะเห็นแนวยอดสนอยู่ในระดับสายตา สามารถมองเห็นแนวยอดสนเป็นแนวติดต่อกันพืดทั้งสี่ด้านของภูกุ่มข้าว ดูแล้วจะเห็นคล้ายๆ ท้องทะเลของยอดสน เมื่อมองไปทางทิศใต้จะเห็นอ่างน้ำเขื่อนจุฬาภรณ์ (น้ำพรม) ที่กว้างใหญ่
