ประวัติวันลอยกระทงและประเพณีลอยกระทง

การลอยกระทงมีวัตถุประสงค์ด้วยกัน 2 ประการ คือ

      1. เพื่อบูชาพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า บางท้องที่ถือว่าลอยกระทงเพื่อบูชาพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าเนื่องในโอกาสที่พระพุทธองค์ได้ไปแสดงธรรมในนาคภิภพ และทรงประทับรอยพระบาทไว้ที่ริมฝั่งแม่น้ำนัมมทานที (1) เพราะฉะนั้นการที่บ้านเรามีประเพณีลอยกระทง ในคืนวันเพ็ญเดือนสิบสองก็เพื่อบูชาพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าเนื่องในโอกาสนี้
 
    ส่วนทางเหนือนั้นมีประเพณียี่เป็ง มีทั้งลอยกระทงและลอยโคมขึ้นไปบนท้องฟ้าเพื่อบูชาพระเขี้ยวแก้วของพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าซึ่งบรรจุอยู่ในจุฬามณีบนสวรรค์ชั้นดาวดึงส์ เราจึงจุดประทีป ลอยโคม ส่งใจขึ้นไปบูชาพระเขี้ยวแก้วร่วมกับพระอินทร์ที่นำหมู่เทวดาบูชาพระเขี้ยวแก้วที่จุฬามณีในวันเพ็ญเดือนสิบสองนี้เช่นกัน

      ยี่เป็งสันทราย ได้จัดประเพณีลอยกระทง และลอยโคม ซึ่งเป็นภาพวัฒนธรรมไทยที่งดงามมากในสายตาของชาวโลก และยังได้มีการจัดลอยโคมที่มองโกเลีย และอินเดียเพื่อบูชาพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าอย่างยิ่งใหญ่มาแล้วด้วย

      2. เพื่อบูชาพระแม่คงคา เป็นการแสดงการขอบคุณน้ำ เพราะมนุษย์เราอยู่ได้เพราะน้ำ ตั้งแต่โบราณมาชุมชนทั้งหลายเวลาสร้างเมือง ต่างก็เลือกติดแม่น้ำ ดังนั้นถึงเวลาในรอบ 1 ปี ก็เลือกเอาวันเพ็ญเดือนสิบสอง ระลึกว่าตลอดปีที่ผ่านมา เราได้อาศัยน้ำในการดำรงชีวิต  ขณะที่ลอยกระทงเราก็นึกถึงคุณของน้ำ ไม่ใช่ลอยเฉยๆ ต้องรำลึกว่าต้องรู้จักใช้น้ำอย่างถูกวิธี และใช้น้ำอย่างคุ้มค่า ไม่ใช้ทิ้งขว้าง  ไม่ทำให้น้ำสกปรก ไม่ปล่อยของเสียลงแม่น้ำ เป็นการขอขมาและขอบคุณพระแม่คงคา ไม่ใช่เป็นการไหว้เทวดาพระแม่คงคาแต่อย่างใด แต่เป็นการแสดงการขอบคุณน้ำ ในฐานะที่เป็นผู้ให้ชีวิตเรา
 

 
ความเป็นมาของเทศกาลวันลอยกระทง  

คติที่มาเกี่ยวกับวันลอยกระทงมีอยู่หลายตำนาน ดังนี้

     1. การลอยกระทง เพื่อขอขมาแก่พระแม่คงคา
     2. การลอยกระทง เพื่อบูชาพระผู้เป็นเจ้าตามคติพราหมณ์คือบูชาพระนารายณ์ซึ่งบรรทม สินธุ์อยู่ในมหาสมุทร
   3. การลอยกระทง เพื่อต้อนรับพระพุทธเจ้า ในวันเสด็จกลับจากเทวโลก เมื่อครั้งเสด็จไป จำพรรษาอยู่บนสวรรค์ชั้นดาวดึงส์เพื่อทรงเทศนาอภิธรรมโปรดพระพุทธมารดา
     4. การลอยกระทง เพื่อบูชาพระพุทธบาท ของพระพุทธเจ้า ที่หาดทรายริมแม่น้ำนัมมทาน ทีเมื่อคราวเสด็จไปแสดงธรรมโปรดในนาคพิภพ
     5. การลอยกระทง เพื่อบูชาพระจุฬามณีบนสวรรค์ ซึ่งเป็นที่บรรจุพระเกศาของ พระพุทธเจ้า
     6. กาลอยกระทง เพื่อบูชาท้าวพกาพรหม บนสวรรค์ชั้นพรหมโลก

ประวัติวันลอยกระทงในประเทศไทย

 
การลอยกระทงในประเทศไทยมีมาตั้วแต่ครั้งสุโขทัย
 
      การลอยกระทงในเมืองไทย มีมาตั้งแต่ครั้งสุโขทัย เรียกว่า การลอยพระประทีป หรือ ลอยโคม เป็นงานนักขัตฤกษ์รื่นเริงของประชาชนทั่วไป ต่อมานางนพมาศหรือท้าวศรีจุฬาลักษณ์สนมเอกของพระร่วง ได้คิดประดิษฐ์ดัดแปลงเป็นรูปกระทงดอกบัวแทนการลอยโคม การลอยกระทงหรือลอยโคมในสมัยนางนพมาศ กระทำเพื่อเป็นการสักการะรอยพระพุทธบาทที่แม่น้ำนัมมทานทีซึ่งเป็นแม่น้ำสายหนึ่งอยู่ในแค้วนทักขิณาบถของประเทศอินเดีย ปัจจุบันเรียกว่า แม่น้ำเนรพุททา

      เมื่อเจ้าชายสิทธัตถะเสด็จออกบวชจนได้บรรลุธรรมเป็นพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าแล้ว หลังจากเผยพระธรรมคำสั่งสอนแก่สาธุชนโดยทั่วไปได้ระยะหนึ่ง จึงเสด็จไปจำพรรษาอยู่บนสวรรค์ชั้นดาวดึงส์ เพื่อทรงเทศนาธรรมโปรดพระพุทธมารดา ครั้งจำพรรษาจนครบ 3 เดือน พระองค์จึงเสด็จกลับลงสู่โลกมนุษย์เมื่อท้าวสักกเทวราชทราบพุทธประสงค์ จึงเนรมิตบันไดทิพย์ขึ้น อันมี บันไดทอง บันไดเงิน และบันไดแก้ว ทอดลงสู่ประตูเมืองสังกัสสนคร บันไดแก้วนั้นเป็นที่ซึ่งพระผู้มีพระภาคเจ้าเสด็จลง บันไดทองเป็นที่สำหรับเทพยดาทั้งหลายตามส่งเสด็จ บันไดเงินสำหรับพรหมทั้งหลายส่งเสด็จ ในการเสด็จลงสู่โลกมนุษย์ครั้งนี้ เหล่าทวยเทพและประชาชนทั้งหลาย ได้พร้อมใจกันทำ การสักการบูชาด้วยทิพย์บุปผามาลัย การลอยกระทงตามคตินี้ จึงเป็นการรับเสด็จพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าจากดาวดึงส์พิภพ (เป็นตำนานเดียวกับประเพณีการตักบาตรเทโวรับเสด็จพระพุทธองค์ลงจากดาวดึงส์)

      รอยพระพุทธบาทของพระพุทธเจ้า ที่ไปปรากฏอยู่ริมฝั่งแม่น้ำนัมมทานทีมีความเป็นมาเกี่ยวข้องกับพุทธประวัติ คือ ครั้งหนึ่งพญานาคทูลอาราธนาพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า ให้เสด็จไปแสดงธรรมโปรดในนาคพิภพ เมื่อพระองค์จะเสด็จกลับ พญานาคทูลขออนุสาวรีย์ไว้กราบไหว้บูชา พระพุทธองค์จึงทรงประดิษฐานรอยพระพุทธบาทไว้ที่หาดทราย ริมฝั่งแม่น้ำนัมมทานทีเพื่อให้บรรดานาคทั้งหลายได้สักการะบูชา
 
การลอยกระทงที่มีความเป็นมาเกี่ยวข้องกับพุทธประวัติ ยังมีอีก 2 เรื่อง คือ
 
      1. การลอยกระทงเพื่อบูชาพระจุฬามณีบนสวรรค์ และ
