วัดท่าการ้อง
เป็นพระอารามพื้นที่ตั้งของวัดโดยรวมเป็นที่ราบอยู่ติดแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา ใกล้กับวัดธรรมารามและวัดกษัตราธิราชอยู่ห่างจากเกาะเมืองประมาณ ๓ กิโลเมตร ตั้งอยู่นอกพระนครด้านทิศตะวันตกหรือบริเวณทุ่งประเชต ปัจจุบันสังกัดคณะสงฆ์มหานิกาย ตั้งอยู่ที่หมู่ ๖ ตำบลบ้านป้อม อำเภอพระนครศรีอยุธยา จังหวัดพระนครศรีอยุธยา มี่ที่ดินทั้งวัดโฉนดเลขที่ ๖๒๘ เนื้อที่ ๒ ไร่ ๗๘ ตารางวา อาณาเขตทิศเหนือติดตั้งอยู่บริเวณชุมชนอิสลามเป็นส่วนใหญ่ ท่ามกลางมัสยิดถึง ๕ มัสยิด โดยมีบ้านเรือนที่เป็นพุทธศาสนิกชนอยู่ประมาณ ๘-๑๐ หลังคาเรือนเท่านั้นวัดนี้ร้างมาตั้งแต่ครั้งกรุงศรีอยุะยาเสียแก่ข้าศึก เมื่อปี พ.ศ.๒๓๑๐ และด้วยกาลเวลาที่ผ่านมาเกือบ ๒๐๐ ปี ตลอดจนไม่ได้รับการบูรณะอย่างจิงจัง ทำให้ดบราณสถานภายในวัดส่วนใหญ่มีสภาพชำรุดทรุดโทรมเป็นอย่างมาก หลังจากสถาปณากรุงเทพมหานครแล้วพระมหากษัตริย์และพระบรมวงศานุวงศ์ในราชวงศ์จักรี ต่างทรงปฏิสังขรณ์พระอารามทั้งภายในและภายนอกพระนครสืบมาทุกราชกาล จึงทำให้อุโบสถของวัดมีรูปแบบศิลปะสมัย กรุงรัตนโกสินทร์เจือปนอยุ่ และในปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๐๘ กรมศิลปากรได้ทำการขุดสำรวจฐานรากพระอุโบสถ พบว่าวัดท่าการ้องได้มีการปฏิสังขรณ์มาไม่ต่ำกว่า ๒ ครั้ง แต่ด้วยเหตุที่โดยรอบวัดเป็นชุมชนอิสลามส่วนใหญ่ และทางราชการไม่มีงบประมาณที่เพียงพอที่จะทำนุบำรุงวัดโบราณต่าง ๆ ได้ทั่วถึง วัดท่าการ้องในเวลาต่อมาจึงมีสภาพไม่ต่างจากวัดร้าง
วัดท่าการ้อง ซึ่งสันนิฐานตามพุทธะลักษณะและซากปรักหังพัง น่าจะสร้างขึ้นในสมัยรัชกาลที่ ๑(สมเด็จพระชัยราชา) ประมาณปีพุทธศักราช ๒๐๗๖ หรือ ๔๗๔ ปีเศษมาแล้ว เพราะมีท่าน้ำกั้นวัด ช่วงนั้นแผ่นดินค่อนข้างสงบพระพุทธศาสนาเจริญรุ่งเรื่องดี อีกทั้งวัดนี้ยังใช้เป็นที่ประทับพักผ่อน เพื่อเผยแพร่ศาสนาของลัทธิลังกาวงศ์อีกด้วย แต่ไม่ปรากฏหลักฐานที่ชัดเจนว่า ผู้ใดเป็นผู้สร้างเพราะอยู่นอกเขตพระบรมมหาราชวัง สันนิฐานว่า คงจะเป็นวัดที่ราษฎรสร้างขึ้น เพราะไม่ปรากฏรายชื่อพระอารามหลวงสมัยอยุธยา แต่จากการสังเกตเม็ดมะยมรอบกำแพงพระอุโบสถ จึงสันนิฐานว่าน่าจะมีการบูรณะปฎิสังขรณ์ขึ้นมาใหม่ในสมัยรัตนโกสินทร์ ช่วงรัชกาลพระนั่งเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวและพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว (รัชกาลที่ ๓-๕ )
จากหลักฐานทางโบราณคดีในการสำรวจ ของพระยาโบราณราชธานินท์พร เดชะคุปต์ ซึ่งทำแผนที่การสำรวจวัดและโบราณสถาน ในสมัยรัชกาลที่ ๕ ระบุชื่อที่คล้ายกับวัดท่าการ้องไว้ ๒ ชื่อ คือวัดท่า กับ วัดการ้อง ซึ่งอยู่ใกล้กัน วัดท่านั้นอยู่ตรงหัวมุมที่แม่น้ำเจ้าพระยาหักเลี้ยวลงสู่ด้านตะวันตก ของเกาะเมืองฝั่งตรงข้ามกับวัดป่าพลู ที่ปากคลองมหานาคทุ่งลุมพลี ส่วนวัดท่าการ้องนั้นอยู่ถัดเข้ามาเกือบถึงหลังวัดธรรมาราม แต่ไม่ทราบช่วงเวลาใด ที่ ๒ วัดนี้รวมเข้าด้วยกันเป็นวัดท่าการ้อง และด้วยไม่ปรากฏหลักฐานการสร้างว่าสร้างในสมัยใด และไม่ปรากฎชื่อวัดท่าการ้องในรายชื่อ พระอารามหลวงสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา จึงสันนิฐานว่า วัดนี้ไม่ใช่พระอารามหลวง แต่น่าจะเป็นวัดที่ราษฎรร่วมกันสร้าง ทั้งอุโบสถก็ได้รับการบูรณะ มาหลายครั้งหลายครา ทำให้รูปแบบทางสถาปัตยกรรมผิดแผกไปจากเดิม จากรูปแบบของเจดีย์รายที่เป็นเจดีย์เพิ่มมุม รวมถึงปรางค์เล็กที่ด้านหน้าอุโบสถ หากพิจารณาจากขนาด รูปทรงและศิลปะการก่อสร้าง สันนิฐานว่าคงสร้างสมัยอยุธยาตอนปลาย ซึ่งเจดีย์รายนั้นก็มักสร้างต่อๆกันมาในชั้นหลัง ทำให้กำหนดอายุของวัดได้ยาก รวมถึงการวางผังสิ่งก่อสร้างซึ่งไม่เน้นสร้างพระวิหาร และจากรูปแบบเจดีย์รายที่ปรากฎ เชื่อว่าวัดท่าการ้องไม่น่าจะมีอายุเก่า ไปถึงสมัยอยุธยาตอนต้น
จากพระราชพงศาวดารฉบับพระราชหัตถเลขา เรื่องศึกหงสาวดีครั้งทึ่ ๑ (คราวเสียสมเด็จพระสุริโยทัย) เหตุการณ์ในแผ่นดินสมเด็จพระมหาจักรพรรดิ ได้กล่าวถึงวัดท่าการ้องความว่า “...สมเด็จพระมหาจักรพรรดิเสวยราชย์ เมื่อปีวอกจุลศักราช ๙๑๐ พ.ศ. ๒๐๙๒ เสวยราชย์ได้ ๗ เดือน พระเจ้าหงสาวดีตเบ็งชเวตี้ก็ยกทัพเข้ามา...ในคราวนั้นปรากฎว่าไทยแบ่งกองทัพออกไปตั้งค่ายรักษาชานพระนครทางด้านเหนือ ๒ ค่าย คือ ให้พระสุนทรสงคราม ผู้ว่าราชการเมืองสุพรรณบุรี คุมพลไปตั้งรักษาการที่ป้อมจำปา อยู่ฝั่งตะวันตก ลำน้ำหัวตะพาน วัดท่าการ้องแห่ง ๑ ...” ซึ่งพระราชพงศาวดารฉบับพระราชหัตถเลขานี้ชำระในรัชกาลที่ ๔ แต่คำอธิบายที่กล่าวถึงที่ตั้งป้อมจำปาว่าอยู่เหนือวัดท่าการ้องเป็นคำอธิบายส่วนหนึ่ง ในตอนอื่นๆที่สมเด็จกรมพระยาดำรงราชานุภาพทรงเขียนอธิบายเนื้อความขึ้นภาพหลัง เพื่อให้ผู้ศึกษาพระราชพงศาวดารเข้าใจได้ชัดเจนขึ้น โดยชี้ตำแหน่งของป้อมจำปา (ป้อมจำปาพล) ว่าอยู่บริเวณใด ซึ่งไม่อาจยืนยันชัดเจนได้ว่า เมื่อเกิดศึกหงสาวดีในรัชกาลสมเด็จพระมหาจักรพรรดินั้น วัดท่าการ้องได้สร้างขึ้นแล้วหรือไม่
