ประเพณีปอยหลวงคำว่า " ปอย " เป็นภาษาพม่าแปลว่า " งานที่มีคนชุมกัน " ถ้ามีคนชุมกันน้อยเราเรียกว่า " ปอยน้อย " ถ้ามีคนชุมกันมากเราเรียกว่า " ปอยหลวง " ในที่นี้คำว่า " ปอยหลวง " จึงได้แก่ " งานมหกรรม " นั่นเองล้านนาไทยมีประเพณีที่ปฏิบัติสืบต่อกันมาแต่โบราณว่าเมื่อสร้างสิ่งที่เป็นสาธารณะประโยชน์ขึ้นเสร็จแล้วหรือสิ่งที่เป็นถาวรวัตถุถวายพระภิกษุสงฆ์เสร็จแล้วจะจัดให้มีการฉลองสิ่งนั้นอีกครั้งหนึ่งเรียกว่า " ปอยหลวง " สิ่งที่เราจะต้องจัดปอยหลวง1 . อุโบสถ2 . วิหาร3 . ศาลา4 . กำแพง5 . กุฏิ ( โบราณไม่ปอยหลวง )6 . หอธรรม ( หอไตร )7 . ตอนหลังเพิ่มสิ่งที่เป็นสาธารณะประโยชน์เข้ามาด้วยเช่นโรงเรียนถนนหนทางโรงพยาบาลฯลฯเมื่อทางวัดได้ก่อสร้างสิ่งใดสิ่งหนึ่งที่กล่าวแล้วเสร็จเรียบร้อยบริบูรณ์ก็จะประชุมศรัทธาผู้อุปัฏฐากของวัด ( ซึ่งมีอยู่ประจำทุกจะวัดเรียกว่าศรัทธาวัดนั้นวัดนี้เป็นต้น ) เพื่อปรึกษาหารือเรื่องจะมีงานฉลองการประชุมกันเช่นนี้ย่อมมีฝ่ายที่เห็นด้วยและฝ่ายที่ไม ่เห็นด้วยต้องลงมติกันฝ่ายไหนชนะมีจำนวนมากกว่าก็ทำตามฝ่ายนั้นเรื่องที่จะลงมติกันมักอยู่ในเรื่องจะปอยหลวงหรือไม่หรือจะทานสังฆ์ ( ตานสังฆ์ )การทานสังฆ์เมื่อพูดถึงเรื่องนี้ก็อยากจะอธิบายให้ทราบถึงเรื่อง " ทานสังฆ์ " ให้เป็นที่เข้าใจกัน " สังฆ์ " คืออะไร ? คนภาคอื่นอาจเข้าใจว่าเป็น " พระสงฆ์ " ความจริง " สังฆ์ " ในที่นี้หมายถึง " ไทยธรรมที่จะถวายทานแก่พระสงฆ์ " การทานสังฆ์ก็คือการถวายทานไทยธรรมแก่สงฆ์นั่นเองถ้ามติตรงกัน " จะทานสังฆ์ " งานการที่จะจัดก็ลดความใหญ่โตมโหฬารลงความไม่มีการละเล่นไม่มีการแห่ครัวทานไม่จำเป็นต้องมีการแผ่นาบุญให้แก่ญาติพี่น้องเพียงนิมนต์พระสงฆ์ภายในตำบลมารับไทยธรรมเจริญพระพุทธมนต์ให้เป็นมงคลแก่สิ่งปลูกสร้างตามธรรมเนียมแล้วทานสังฆ์แก่ พระสงฆ์เป็นเสร็จพิธีส่วนศรัทธาของวัดนั้นก็ไม่จำเป็นจะต้องทำครัวทานใหญ่จะเพียงแต่เตรียมทำสังฆ์สักลูกหนึ่งแบกไปวัดเท่านั้นแต่ว่าทุกหลังคาเรือนของวัดนั้นมักจะต้องเป็นศรัทธาสังฆ์ใส่ยอดตามเจตนาหลังคาละ 1 สังฆ์เป็นอย่างน้อย
