การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาการใช้งานวารสารต่างประเทศประเภทสิ่งพิมพ์ ความต้องการในการใช้วารสารฉบับทันสมัย และวารสารฉบับย้อนหลัง เพื่อใช้เป็นแนวทางและข้อมูลเบื้องต้นในการคัดเลือกและจัดหาวารสารต่างประเทศประเภทสิ่งพิมพ์ ให้สอดคล้องกับงบประมาณ และตรงตามความต้องการของผู้ใช้บริการห้องสมุด รวมทั้งเป็นแนวทางสำหรับหอสมุดกลาง มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่ เพื่อพิจารณาจัดสรรเงินงบประมาณในการจัดซื้อวารสารภาษาต่างเทศประเภทสิ่งพิมพ์เข้าห้องสมุด
เครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการรวบรวมข้อมูลคือ แบบสอบถาม โดยแบ่งออกเป็น 5 ตอน ประกอบด้วยข้อมูลทั่วไปและข้อมูลส่วนตัวผู้ตอบแบบสอบถาม สภาพการใช้วารสารต่างประเทศประเภทสิ่งพิมพ์ ปัญหาการใช้วารสารต่างประเทศประเภทสิ่งพิมพ์ ความต้องการการใช้วารสารต่างประเทศประเภทสิ่งพิมพ์ ความคิดเห็นและข้อเสนอแนะอื่นๆของผู้ตอบแบบสอบถาม โดยส่งแบบสอบถามให้กลุ่มตัวอย่างจำนวน 300 คน และได้รับแบบสอบถามกลับคืน 156 คน คิดเป็นร้อยละ 52 ของการส่งแบบสอบถามทั้งหมด

จากผลการวิจัยครั้งนี้ทำให้ทราบถึงสภาพการใช้วารสารต่างประเทศประเภทสิ่งพิมพ์ ปัญหาการใช้วารสารต่างประเทศประเภทสิ่งพิมพ์ ความต้องการใช้วารสารต่างประเทศประเภทสิ่งพิมพ์ รวมไปถึงข้อเสนอแนะต่างๆ ซึ่งจะเป็นแนวทางให้หอสมุดพิจารณาการจัดหาวารสารต่างประเทศประเภทสิ่งพิมพ์ให้ตรงกับความต้องการของผู้ใช้บริการและเหมาะสมยิ่งขึ้น
