จังหวัดอุบลราชธานี มีคำขวัญประจำจังหวัดขึ้นต้นด้วยคำว่า "เมืองแห่งดอกบัวงาม....." อีกท่อนหนึ่งคือ "งามล้ำเทียนพรรษา...." เมื่อมาพิจารณาดู ทั้งสองสิ่งนี้น่าจะเป็นเอกลักษณ์ของเมืองอุบลฯ แต่ การจะใช้ดอกบัวเป็นเอกลักษณ์ฺของเมืองอุบล ก็คงไม่ชัดเจนนัก เนื่องจากจังหวัดอื่นๆ เช่น ปทุมธานี ก็มีเอกลักษณ์คือ ดอกบัว เช่นกัน ดังนั้น เอกลักษณ์ที่ชัดเจนที่สุดของจังหวัดอุบลราชธานี น่าจะเป็น ต้นเทียนพรรษา ซึ่งเป้นภูมิปัญญาของท้องถิ่นมาช้านาน

เมื่อคราว พ.ศ.2500 ถือเป็นปีกึ่งพุทธกาล จังหวัดอุบลราชธานีร่วมเฉลิมฉลองวาระโอกาสสำคัญ โดยการสร้างพระบรมธาตุเจดีย์ โดยเลียนแบบเจดีย์พุทธคยา ประเทศอินเดีย สถานที่ตรัสรู้ของพระพุทธเจ้า สร้างไว้ที่วัดหนองบัว อ.เมือง จ.อุบลฯ เป็น landmark ที่โด่งดังมากในสมัยนั้น ภาพพระบรมธาตุเจดีย์ วัดหนองบัว ได้ถูกเผยแพร่ออกไปมากมาย ถูกนำมาทำเป็นปกหนังสือ นิตยสารหลายครั้ง นักท่องเที่ยวที่มาเยือนเมืองอุบลฯ ต้องไปถ่ายภาพคู่กับพระบรมธาตุเจดีย์วันหนองบัว จนเรียกชื่อวัดติดปากว่า "วัดพระธาตุหนองบัว"

ต่อมา ในปี พ.ศ.2542 วโรกาสเฉลิมพระชนมพรรษา พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวครบ 6 รอบ ชาวอุบลฯ จึงระดมความคิดกันว่าจะจัดสร้างอะไรเพื่อเป็นการเฉลิมฉลองเทิดพระเกียรติพระบามทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว และให้เป็น Landmark แห่งใหม่ของเมืองอุบลฯ ด้วย เท่าที่ไกด์อุบลจำได้ช่วงนั้น จังหวัดอุบลฯ มีท่านศิวะ แสงมณี เป็นผู้ว่าราชการจังหวัด ส่วนหอการค้าจังหวัดอุบลฯ นั้น มีนายแพทย์บัณฑิต เชาวกุล (ผอ.รพ.อุบลรักษ์ เสียชีวิตแล้ว) เป็นตัวตั้งตัวตี อธิบายตามเวทีระดมความเห็นต่างๆ ว่าจะสร้าง ต้นเทียนยักษ์ (ปูนปั้น) ไว้ที่ทุ่งศรีเมือง เพื่อให้เป็น Landmark ของเมืองอุบล ท่ามกลางเสียงชาวบ้านที่เห็นด้วยและคัดค้าน สุดท้ายก็ได้สร้างอภิมหาต้นเทียนเฉลิมพระเกียรติ ความสูง 72 ฟุต ตามพระชนมายุ 72 พรรษา ขององค์พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ในปีนั้น

ปัจจุบัน ต้นเทียนเฉลิมพระเกียรติ ที่ทุ่งศรีเมือง ถือว่าเป็น Landmark ของเมืองอุบลฯ อย่างสมบูรณ์แบบ นักท่องเที่ยวนิยมมาถ่ายรูปด้วย ภาพต้นเทียนเฉลิมพระเกียรติขึ้นปกหนังสือมากมาย เห็นต้นเทียนนี้ที่ไหน ทายได้เลยว่า อยู่จังหวัดอุบลราชธานี แม่้กระทั่งการจัดงานสำคัญๆ ของจังหวัดอุบลราชธานี ก็นิยมใช้ต้นเทียนเฉลิมพระเกียรติเป็นฉากหลัง ถือเป็นความภาคภูมิใจของชาวอุบลฯ ที่มีภูมิปัญญาอัรล้ำค้าคือ "เทียนพรรษา" นั่นเอง
