เราสามารถจำแนกหินที่อยู่บนเปลือกโลกทางธรณีวิทยาออกได้เป็น 3 พวกใหญ่ ๆ คือ

หินตะกอน (Sedimentary Rocks)
หินแปร (Metamorphic Rocks)
แต่เนื่องจากลักษณะที่หินตะกอนในประเทศไทยเรามักแสดงลักษณะชั้น (bed) เนื่องจากการตกตะกอนให้เห็นเด่นชัด จึงทำให้ในอดีตมีหลายท่านเรียกชื่อหินตะกอนเหล่านี้อีกอย่างหนึ่งว่า หินชั้น แต่ในปัจจุบันพบว่าการเรียกชื่อหินตะกอนว่าหินชั้นนั้น ไม่ค่อยได้รับการนิยมเท่าใดนัก เนื่องจากนักธรณีวิทยาพบว่ามีหลายครั้งๆ ที่หินอัคนีหรือหินแปรก็แสดงลักษณะเป็นชั้นๆเช่นกัน เช่น ชั้นลาวาของหินบะซอลต์ หรือริ้วรอยชั้นเนื่องจากการแปรสภาพของหินไนส์ และในบางครั้งหินตะกอนก็ไม่แสดงลักษณะเป็นชั้นๆก็มี

ดังนั้นทางด้านการศึกษาธรณีวิทยาของประเทศไทยจึงพยายามรณรงค์ให้กลุ่มนิสิตนักศึกษาและประชาชนทั่วไปให้ใช้ชื่อ หินตะกอน ในการเรียกชื่อหินตะกอนแทนคำว่า หินชั้น
