ความเป็นมาของรางวัลซีไรต์

เมื่อต้นปี พ.ศ. 2522 ฝ่ายบริหารของโรงแรมแมนดาริน โอเรียนเต็ล กรุงเทพฯ ได้ริเริ่มรางวัลนี้ เนื่องจากโรงแรมแมนดาริน โอเรียนเต็ล กรุงเทพฯ มีประวัติเกี่ยวข้องกับนักเขียนชั้นนำของโลกมาเป็นเวลาช้านาน จะเห็นได้จากการที่อาคารเก่าแก่ของโรงแรมที่ชื่อว่า “ตึกนักเขียน” (AUTHORS’ RESIDENCE) อันประกอบด้วยห้องชุดพิเศษ โดยใช้ชื่อนักเขียนคนสำคัญที่เคยมาพัก ได้แก่ ซอมเมอร์เซ้ท มอห์ม โนเอล โฆเวิด โจเซฟ คอนราด และเจมส์ มิเชนเนอร์ นอกจากนี้ยังมีห้องชุดเกรแฮม กรีน จอห์น เลอ คาร์เร่ และ บาร์บาร่า คาร์ทแลนด์ ในตึกริเวอร์วิงด้วย
ฝ่ายบริหารของโรงแรมแมนดาริน โอเรียนเต็ล กรุงเทพฯ จึงได้ร่วมปรึกษากับ บริษัท การบินไทย จำกัด (มหาชน) และกลุ่มบริษัทในเครืออิตัลไทย จัดตั้งรางวัลวรรณกรรมนี้ขึ้น โดยมีพระวรวงศ์เธอพระองค์เจ้าเปรม บุรฉัตร ทรงเป็นประธานและได้รับความร่วมมือเป็นอย่างดีจากสมาคมนักเขียนแห่งประเทศ ไทย และสมาคมภาษาและหนังสือแห่งประเทศไทย ต่อมา มูลนิธิจิม ทอมป์สัน ได้เข้าร่วมในปี พ.ศ. 2524 (แต่ถอนตัวออกในปี 2530), ธนาคารกรุงเทพ เข้าร่วมในปี พ.ศ. 2527 …หัวข้อในการหารือในครั้งนั้น คือ การส่งเสริมสนับสนุนนักเขียนในกลุ่มอาเซียนทั้ง 5 ประเทศ ได้แก่ อินโดนีเซีย มาเลเซีย ฟิลิปปินส์ สิงคโปร์ และ ไทย และการเผยแพร่ให้โลกรู้ถึงวัฒนธรรมทางวรรณกรรมของภูมิภาคนี้ ต่อมาได้มีประเทศต่างๆในกลุ่มอาเซียนทยอยเข้าร่วมงานซีไรต์จนครบสิบประเทศ ดังนี้ ประเทศบรูไนดารุสซาลัมเข้าร่วมเมื่อปี 2529 ประเทศเวียดนามเข้าร่วมเมื่อปี 2539 ประเทศลาว และพม่าเข้าร่วมเมื่อปี 2541 ประเทศกัมพูชาเข้าร่วมเมื่อปี 2542
