น้ำมีความสำคัญต่อการดำเนินชีวิตของสิ่งมีชีวิต ทั้งในด้านอุปโภคและบริโภคแต่ในปัจจุบันมนุษย์ใช้น้ำอย่างไม่คำนึงถึงความสำคัญของน้ำ ซึ่งมนุษย์ส่วนใหญ่นั้นเห็นแก่ตัว มักง่าย เช่น ใช้ในการชำระล้างร่างกาย และสิ่งของเครื่องใช้แล้วก็ปล่อยน้ำเสียลงสู่แม่น้ำ ลำคลอง โดยไม่มีการกรองหรือการบำบัดก่อนปล่อยลงสู่แม่น้ำ ซึ่งก่อให้เกิดมลพิษทางน้ำ
