กุหลาบ สายประดิษฐ์ เกิดเมื่อปีมะโรง

กุหลาบ สายประดิษฐ์ เกิดเมื่อปีมะโรง วันที่ ๓๑ มีนาคม พ.ศ. ๒๔๔๘ ที่กรุงเทพมหานคร ในปลายสมัยรัชกาลที่ ๕ บิดาชื่อนายสุวรรณ เป็นเสมียนเอก ทำงานอยู่กรมรถไฟ มารดาชื่อนางสมบุญ เป็นชาวนาอยู่จังหวัดสุพรรณบุรี พี่น้องทางแม่มีอาชีพ ทำนา แต่นางสมบุญคนเดียวที่ไม่ชอบทำนา เมื่อโตเป็นสาวจึงเข้ามาอยู่กับญาติที่ กรุงเทพมหานคร เคยอยู่ในวังเจ้าฟ้ากรมหลวง นครราชสีมา หรือ "วังสวนกุหลาบ" ที่ถนนประชาธิปไตย จนได้พบกับ นายสุวรรณ และได้แต่งงานกัน ต่อมาได้ไปอาศัยอยู่ที่บ้าน พ่อของนายสุวรรณ ซึ่งเป็นหมอยาแผนโบราณ มีบ้านเป็น เรือนแฝดสองหลังอยู่ในตรอกพระยาสุนทรพิมล ใกล้ ๆ หัวลำโพง นายสุวรรณกับนางสมบุญ ได้ให้กำเนิดบุตรสองคน คนโตเป็นหญิง ชื่อจำรัส นิมาภาส (แต่งงานกับนายกุหลาบ นิมาภาส) ส่วนคนเล็กเป็นชายชื่อกุหลาบ สายประดิษฐ์ ภายหลังต่อมา สี่ชีวิตพ่อแม่ลูกได้แยกครอบครัวมาเช่าห้องแถว ที่เป็นของพระยาสิงหเสนีอยู่แถว ๆ หัวลำโพง

เมื่ออายุสี่ขวบ กุหลาบเริ่มต้นเรียนหนังสือครั้งแรกที่โรงเรียนวัดหัวลำโพง จนถึงชั้นประถม ๔ นายสุวรรณได้ ช่วยสอน หนังสือให้ลูกชายคนเดียวก่อนเข้า โรงเรียนด้วย เนื่องจากทำงานอยู่กับผู้จัดการฝรั่งที่กรมรถไฟ นายสุวรรณ จึงพอพูดภาษาอังกฤษได้ เข้าใจว่ากุหลาบคงจะได้อิทธิพลเรื่องการเรียนรู้ภาษา อังกฤษมาจากพ่อของเขาไม่มากก็น้อย แต่พ่อของกุหลาบอายุสั้น ป่วยเป็นไข้ เสียชีวิตแต่เมื่ออายุเพียงแค่ ๓๕ ปี ตอนนั้นกุหลาบเพิ่งอายุหกขวบ แม่และพี่สาว ได้เลี้ยงดูเขาต่อมา โดยแม่รับจ้างตัดเย็บเสื้อผ้าและส่งพี่สาวไปฝึกเล่นละครรำ และละครร้อง เพื่อหาเงิน มาช่วยจุนเจือ และส่งเสียให้กุหลาบได้เรียนหนังสือ โดยไม่ติดขัด เมื่อจบชั้นประถม ๔ แม่ก็ได้เอากุหลาบไปฝากเข้าเรียนต่อ ที่โรงเรียนทหารเด็ก ของกรมหลวงนครราชสีมา โรงเรียนแห่งนี้เป็น โรงเรียนประจำสอนทั้งวิชาทั่วไปและวิชาทหาร กุหลาบได้เรียน อยู่ที่โรงเรียนนี้สองปี แม่ก็รู้สึกสงสาร เพราะเห็นว่าลูกชายต้องอยู่เวรยามแบบทหารและ เห็นว่าอยากให้กุหลาบ ได้เรียนวิชาทั่วไปมากกว่า ดังนั้นจึงเอาออกจากโรงเรียนทหารให้มาอยู่ที่ โรงเรียนวัดเทพศิรินทร์ โดยเริ่มต้นเรียน ในชั้นมัธยม ๒ และได้เรียนเรื่อยมาจนจบชั้นมัธยม ๘ เมื่อ พ.ศ. ๒๔๖๘ กุหลาบได้เห็นชีวิตลูกผู้ดี และลูกชาวบ้าน ที่โรงเรียนนี้ รักการเขียนหนังสือมาตั้งแต่อยู่โรงเรียนนี้ เมื่ออยู่มัธยมชั้นสูง ได้ทำหนังสืออ่านกันใน ชั้นเรียน ออกหนังสือชื่อ "ดรุณสาร" และ "ศรีเทพ" มี มจ.อากาศดำเกิงและเพื่อนคนอื่นอีกทำร่วมด้วย

กุหลาบ สายประดิษฐ์เริ่มต้นใช้นามปากกา "ศรีบูรพา" เป็นครั้งแรก โดยเขียนงานชื่อ "แถลงการณ์" ลงตีพิมพ์ใน หนังสือพิมพ์ทศวารบรรเทิง ในช่วงนั้น กุหลาบ สายประดิษฐ์ ได้มาทำงานเป็นครูสอน ภาษาอังกฤษ อยู่ที่โรงเรียน รวมการสอนและเป็นนักประพันธ์อยู่ในสำนักรวมการแปล ของนายแตงโม จันทวิมพ์แล้วและเหตุการณ์สำคัญเกิดขึ้นในปีนี้ คือได้พบกับนักเขียนรุ่นพี่ ชื่อบุญเติม โกมลจันทร์ (ซึ่งต่อมาเปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น "โกศล") บุญเติม หรือ โกศลทำหน้าที่เป็น ผู้จัดการอยู่ที่สำนักทั้งสองนี้ มีชื่อเสียงเป็นนักแปล และนักเขียนกลอนลำตัดในรุ่นนั้น และเป็นผู้เริ่มใช้นามปากกา ที่มีชื่อว่า "ศรี" นำหน้า กุหลาบ สายประดิษฐ์ เด็กหนุ่มอายุ ๑๘ ผู้ใฝ่ฝันอยากเป็นนักประพันธ์ จึงได้มาฝึกการประพันธ์ อยู่ที่สำนักพิมพ์นี้ ด้วยความมุ่งหวังอยากเรียนร้ และหารายได้จากงานเขียนไปจุนเจือครอบครัว ที่มีฐานะค่อนข้างยากจน พร้อมกันนั้นก็ ได้ชักชวนเพื่อนร่วมรุ่น อีกสองคน คือ ชะเอม อันตรเสนและสนิท เจริญรัฐให้มาช่วยกันที่ สำนักรวมการแปลด้วย บุญเติม หรือ โกศล โกมลจันทร์เจ้าสำนักแห่งตระกูล "ศรี" มีนามปากกาเริ่มต้นตระกูล "ศรี" ของตนเองว่า "ศรีเงินยวง" ส่วนบรรดารุ่นน้อง ที่มาเข้าสำนัก เช่น ชะเอม อันตรเสน ได้นามปากกาว่า "ศรีเสนันตร์" สนิท เจริญรัฐ ได้นามปากกาว่า "ศรีสุรินทร์" และ กุหลาบ สายประดิษฐ์ ได้นามปากกาว่า "ศรีบูรพา"
