2 เกณฑ์การประเมิณต้นราชพฤกษ์
เมื่อปี พ.ศ.2544 คณะกรรมการเอกลักษณ์ของชาติ ได้มีข้อเสนอและได้สรุปให้มีการกำหนดสัญลักษณ์ประจำชาติ 3 สิ่ง ซึ่งประกอบไปด้วย ดอกไม้ สัตว์ และสถาปัตยกรรม ซึ่งจากการพิจารณาได้ข้อสรุปว่า ให้สัตว์ประจำชาติคือ “ช้างไทย” ส่วนในด้านสถาปัตยกรรมประจำชาติคือ “ศาลาไทย” และในส่วนของดอกไม้ประจำชาติก็คือ “ดอกราชพฤกษ์” โดยมีเหตุผลในการคัดเลือกดังนี้
ต้นคูน หรือ ต้นราชพฤกษ์ จัดเป็นต้นไม้ประจำชาติไทย (ตามประกาศของกรมป่าไม้)
ต้นไม้ราชพฤกษ์ เป็นต้นไม้ที่คนไทยทั่วไปรู้จักกันอย่างแพร่หลาย ในนามของ “ต้นคูน” สามารถพบเห็นได้ทั่วไปของทุกภาคในประเทศ
ต้นราชพฤกษ์มีความเกี่ยวข้องกับประเพณีชาวไทยมาอย่างช้านาน เพราะเป็นไม้มงคลนามและใช้ในการประอบพิธีสำคัญๆ ต่างๆ หลายพิธีเช่น พิธีลงเสาหลักเมือง ทำคฑาจอมพล ใช้ทำยอดธงชัยเฉลิมพล เป็นต้น
ต้นราชพฤกษ์ นั้นสามารถนำมาใช้ประโยชน์ได้อย่างหลากหลาย เช่น การใช้เป็นยาสมุนไพร หรือนำมาใช้ทำเป็นสาบ้านเสาเรือนได้ ฯลฯ
ต้นราชพฤกษ์ เป็นต้นไม้ที่มีอายุยืนนานและแข็งแรงทนนาน
