พิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ พระนคร นับเป็นพิพิธภัณฑสถานสำหรับประชาชนแห่งแรกของประเทศไทย ซึ่งตั้งขึ้นเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2402 แต่เดิมเป็น "พระราชวังบวรสถานมงคล" หรือ "วังหน้า" ซึ่งประกอบด้วยพระที่นั่งและพระตำหนักอันนับเป็นสถาปัตยกรรมไทยที่งดงามอีกแห่งหนึ่ง

ครั้งต่อมาเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2430 กรมพระราชวังบวรวิชัยชาญ ทิวงคต จึงได้มีประกาศยกเลิกตำแหน่งพระอุปราชแล้ว ทำให้สถานที่ในพระราชวังบวรสถานมงคลว่างลง รัชกาลที่ 5 จึงโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ย้ายพิพิธภัณฑสถานจากหอคองคอเดีย ไปตั้งจัดแสดงที่พระราชวังบวรสถานมงคลเฉพาะด้านหน้า 3 องค์ โดยใช้พระที่ นั่งด้านหน้า คือ พระที่นั่งศิวโมกขพิมาน พระที่นั่งพุทไธสวรรย์ และพระที่นั่งอิศราวินิจฉัย เรียกว่า "พิพิธภัณฑ์วังหน้า"
