ดร.ศรัณย์ โปษยะจินดา รองผู้อำนวยการสถาบันวิจัยดาราศาสตร์แห่งชาติ ชี้แจงกรณีที่ปรากฏแสงสว่างวาบในคลิปวีดีโอที่ถ่ายไว้ในช่วงหัวค่ำวันที่ 2 มีนาคม 2558 แสงดังกล่าวเคลื่อนที่เป็นเส้นตรง ปรากฏประมาณ 4-5 วินาที แล้วดับวูบไป ไม่มีแนวควัน คือปรากฏการณ์ “อิริเดียมแฟลร์” เป็นแสงสะท้อนของดาวเทียมสื่อสารสหรัฐที่มีชื่อว่า ดาวเทียมอิริเดียม เกิดจากแผงเซลล์แสงอาทิตย์ทำมุมสะท้อนแสงดวงอาทิตย์พอดี ดาวเทียมดังกล่าวโคจรอยู่รอบโลกเป็นจำนวนกว่า 66 ดวง ในวันที่ 2 มีนาคม 2558 ตรงกับช่วงที่ดาวเทียมอิริเดียม 30 โคจรผ่านประเทศไทย มีแนวการโคจรจากทิศเหนือลงสู่ทิศใต้ และจะปรากฏอิริเดียมแฟลร์ ในช่วงเวลาประมาณ 19.53 น. ตามเวลาในประเทศไทย แสงสะท้อนดังกล่าวมีความสว่างปรากฏที่แมกนิจูด –7.4 ที่ตาคนเราสามารถมองเห็นได้อย่างชัดเจน
