1.       กรณีที่คำพยางค์เดียวมีสระตัวเดียวและตามด้วยพยัญชนะตัวเดียว ให้เพิ่มพยัญชนะซ้ำก่อนเติม –er  หรือ –est เช่น  thin  thinner, big  biggest
2.       กรณีที่คำพยางค์เดียวลงท้ายด้วย e ให้ตัด e ทิ้งก่อนเติม – er หรือ – est เช่น  wide  wider /  widest   
3.     กรณีที่คำพยางค์เดียวลงท้ายด้วย y ให้เปลี่ยน y เป็น i ก่อนเติม –er หรือ –est เช่น dry  drier / driest กรณีที่ต้องการเน้นการเปรียบเทียบเป็นกรณีเฉพาะเพื่อเน้นความหมาย หรือมีพยางค์เดียวอยู่ร่วมกับคำ adjective หลายพยางค์ ให้ใช้ more / most ในการเปรียบเทียบ เช่น  
The icing was supposed to be pink and white, but it looked more red than pink. (เน้นว่ามีสีแดงมากกว่าสีชมพู)
That sofa might look nice, but this one is more soft and comfortable. (soft  คำพยางค์เดียวแต่ comfortable คำหลายพยางค์)
2.     คำ adjective สองพยางค์ที่ลงท้ายคำด้วย y เมื่อใช้รูปการเปรียบเทียบจะใช้
ใช้วิธีการเติม –er หรือ – est แต่ต้องเปลี่ยน y เป็น i ก่อนเติมรูปเปรียบเทียบ คำสองพยางค์ที่ลงท้ายด้วย –ow  /er ให้เปลี่ยนรูป โดยการเติม –er  est  เช่น
