อวนลากในประเทศไทยเป็นอวนลากหน้าดินโดยส่วนใหญ่มี 3 แบบหลัก ๆ คือ อวนลากคู่ (ภาพที่ 1) อวนลากแผ่นตะเฆ่ (ภาพที่ 2) และอวยลากแคระ หรืออวนลากคานถ่าง

"อวนลาก" เป็นเครื่องมือที่ทำลายพันธุ์สัตว์น้ำและแหล่งที่อยู่อาศัยสัตว์น้ำที่ร้ายแรง ได้แก่ การจับปลาวัยอ่อน กวาดล้างปะการัง หญ้าทะเล และความอุดมสมบูรณ์ของหน้าดิน (ภาพ 3-5)
งานวิจัยพบว่าอัตราการจับสัตว์น้ำของ "อวนลาก" ต่อ 1 ชม. ลดลงจาก 300 กิโลกรัมในปี 2503 เหลือเพียง ไม่ถึง 20 กิโลกรัมในปัจจุบัน
งานวิจัยพบว่า มีเพียง 33% ของผลผลิตของ "อวนลาก" ในแต่ละครั้งเป็นอาหารคน แต่เกือบ 70% มีสภาพเป็น "ปลาเป็ด" (เละเทะ) ส่งเข้าโรงงานอาหารสัตว์ และสัดส่วน 30-40% ของ "ปลาเป็ด" เป็นลูกปลาเศรษฐกิจวัยอ่อน เช่นปลาอินทรีย์ ปลากะพง ปลาเก๋า หมึก กุ้ง เป็นต้น

"อวนลาก" ถูกห้ามเพิ่มจำนวนเพราะถือว่าเป็นเครื่องมือทำลายล้าง (destructive fishing) กระทรวงเกษตรสั่งควบคุมจำนวนตั้งแต่ปี พฺศ. 2523 แต่ที่ผ่านมามีแรงกดดันทางการเมือง..กรมประมงผ่อนผันให้ สามารถเพิ่มการจดทะเบียนอาชญาบัตรอีก 3 ครั้งคือในปี 2525, 2532, และ 2539
ปัจจุบันมีเรืออวนลากถูกกฏหมายอยู่ ประมาณ 2 พันกว่าลำทั่วประเทศ แต่เรือเถื่อนอยู่ 3 พันกว่าลำ (ตัวเลขโดยประมาณการทั้งสองตัวเลข) (อวนลากเถื่อนจะถืออาชญาบัตรเครื่องมือประมงชนิดอื่น เช่นอวนลอย อวนครอบหมึก เป็นต้น แต่ทำประมงด้วยเครื่องมืออวนลาก)
