อุทยานแห่งชาติดอยอินทนนท์

ป่าดอยอินทนนท์นั้นเดิมเป็นป่าสงวนแห่งชาติ ต่อมาเมื่อได้มีการสำรวจทางอากาศพบว่า ป่าแห่งนี้มีสภาพสมบูรณ์มาก เป็นต้นน้ำลำธาร มีทิวทัศน์และเอกลักษณ์ทางสภาพธรรมชาติสวยงาม และเป็นที่อาศัยของสัตว์ป่านานาชนิด เหมาะสมที่จะจัดตั้งเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติในสมัยนั้นสภาบริหารคณะปฏิวัติ (หัวหน้าคณะปฏิวัติคือ จอมพล ถนอม กิตติขจร) จึงได้อนุมัติหลักการให้กรมป่าไม้ดำเนินการ ที่ดินป่าดอยอินทนนท์ในท้องที่ตำบลบ้านหลวง ตำบลสบเตี้ยะ ตำบลสองแคว ตำบลยางคราม อำเภอจอมทอง ตำบลแม่วิว อำเภอสันป่าตอง เนื้อที่ 168,750 ไร่ จึงได้รับการประกาศเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติลำดับที่ 6 วันที่ 2 ตุลาคม 2515
ต่อมาเมื่อวันที่ 16 มกราคม 2517 พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวและสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถ ได้เสด็จฯ บริเวณดอยขุนกลาง อุทยานแห่งชาติดอยอินทนนท์ ทรงมีพระราชกระแสรับสั่งให้พิจารณาขยายอาณาเขตของอุทยานฯ ออกไปครอบคลุมถึงพื้นที่ที่เป็นแหล่งกำเนิดต้นน้ำลำธารด้วย กรมป่าไม้จึงได้กำหนดจัดตั้งป่าดอยอินทนนท์ในท้องที่ตำบลแม่นาจร ตำบลช่างเคิ่ง ตำบลท่าผา อำเภอแม่แจ่ม ตำบลแม่วิน ตำบลทุ่งปี้ อำเภอสันป่าตอง และตำบลสองแคว ตำบลยางคราม ตำบลบ้านหลวง ตำบลสบเตี้ยะ อำเภอจอมทอง รวมเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติดอยอินทนนท์ ในปี พ.ศ.2521 รวมเนื้อที่ทั้งหมด 301,500 ไร่
อุทยานแห่งชาติดอยอินทนนท์เป็นที่อยู่อาศัยของพรรณพืชและสัตว์เขตกึ่งร้อนและเขตอบอุ่น ทั้งที่หายากและมีอยู่เฉพาะถิ่น เป็นพื้นที่ต้นน้ำลำธารที่สำคัญของแม่ปิง มีพื้นที่ต้นน้ำย่อยให้กำเนิดแม่น้ำลำธารหลายสาย ที่สำคัญได้แก่ ลำน้ำแม่กลาง แม่ยะ แม่เตี้ยะ ลำน้ำแม่แจ่ม ลำน้ำแม่วาง และไหลผ่านอำเภอจอมทอง อำเภอแม่แจ่ม อำเภอฮอด อำเภอแม่วาง และอำเภอสันป่าตอง
