ในสมัยพุทธกาล มีสามีภรรยาคู่หนึ่งรักกันมาก
กราบทูลถามพระพุทธเจ้าว่า
เขาทั้งสองปรารถนาจะได้พบกันอีก
ทั้งในชาติปัจจุบันและชาติหน้า

พระพุทธเจ้าตรัสว่า
สามีภรรยาหวังว่าจะได้พบกันครองคู่กัน
ทั้งในชาตินี้หรือชาติหน้า
พึงเป็นผู้มีธรรม 4 ประการเสมอกันคือ

1. สมสัทธา มีศรัทธาเสมอกัน
คือว่า เชื่อกรรม เชื่อผลของกรรม
เชื่อมั่นในคุณพระรัตนตรัย เป็นต้น
จะเรียกว่ามีทรรศนะตรงกันก็ได้
เวลานี้ก็มีเรื่องเกิดขึ้นหลายอย่าง
หลายเรื่องในสังคมของเรา
มีลัทธิความนับถือศาสนาที่ไม่ตรงกัน
สามีไปทางหนึ่ง ภรรยาไปทางหนึ่ง
คือว่า มีศรัทธาไม่เหมือนกัน
สามีก็ศรัทธาวัดโน้น ภรรยาก็ศรัทธาวัดนี้
คือ ต้องใช้ปัญญาส่องดูนะครับ ว่าอะไรถูก อะไรผิด
คุยกันด้วยเหตุผลไม่ใช่เอาความเชื่อเฉพาะตัว
มากีดกันทั้งสองออกจากกัน พูดกันด้วยเหตุผล

2. สมสีลา มีศีลเสมอกัน
ก็คือว่า มีความประพฤติดีด้วยกัน ตั้งอยู่ในคุณธรรม
คือว่า ไม่เบียดเบียนกัน และก็ไม่เบียดเบียนผู้อื่น
มีศีลเสมอกัน มีความดีด้วยกัน อย่างนี้ก็ไปกันได้
ไม่รังเกียจกันในเรื่องความประพฤติ

3. สมจาคา มีจาคะเสมอกัน
เสียสละให้แก่กันไม่เห็นแก่ตัว
ก็รวมถึงว่า มีจิตใจโอบอ้อมอารี
ต่อญาติพี่น้องของคนทั้งสองฝ่าย
และก็คนทั่วไป และต้องมีขอบเขตจำกัด

4. สมปัญญา คือ ต้องมีปัญญาเสมอกัน

ไม่ขัดแย้ง ทะเลาะวิวาทกันเพราะวุฒิปัญญา

มีทิฏฐิมานะเข้าหากัน อย่างนี้อยู่กันไม่ได้
