วันสารทเดือนสิบ หรือภาษาท้องถิ่นเรียกว่า “วันชิงเปรต” นั้น ในเดือนสิบ (กันยายน) คือการทำบุญกลางเดือนสิบ เพื่อนำเครื่องอุปโภคและเครื่องบริโภคไปถวายพระ อุทิศส่วนกุศลแก่บรรพบุรุษของตน ซึ่งประเพณีนี้เป็นความเชื่อของพุทธศาสนิกชนของชนชาวจังหวัดนครศรีธรรมราช ที่เชื่อว่าบรรพบุรุษอัน ได้แก่ ปู่ ย่า ตา ยาย และญาติพี่น้องที่ล่วงลับไปแล้ว หากทำความชั่วจะตกนรกกลายเป็นเปรต ต้องทนทุกข์ทรมานในอเวจี ซึ่งจะต้องอาศัยผลบุญที่ลูกหลานอุทิศส่วนกุศลให้แต่ละปีมายังชีพ ดังนั้นในวันแรม 1 ค่ำ เดือนสิบ เปรตจึงถูกปล่อยตัวกลับมายังโลกมนุษย์ เพื่อมาขอส่วนบุญจากลูกหลานญาติพี่น้อง และจะกลับไปนรกในวันแรม 15 ค่ำ เดือนสิบ ในโอกาสนี้เองลูกหลานและผู้ยังมีชีวิตอยู่จึงนำอาหารไปทำบุญที่วัด เพื่ออุทิศส่วนกุศลให้แก่ผู้ที่ล่วงลับไปแล้ว เป็นการแสดงความกตัญญูกตเวทีในงานบุญสารทเดือนสิบ

พิธีกรรมของประเพณีสารทเดือนสิบ

ในวันแรม 13 ค่ำเดือนสิบ คือ การบรรจุและประดับด้วยสิ่งของ อาหาร ขนมเดือนสิบลงในภาชนะที่เตรียมไว้ เช่น ถาด กะละมัง เป็นต้น ชั้นล่างสุดบรรจุอาหารแห้ง ชั้นสองบรรจุพืชผัก ชั้นสามเป็นของใช้ในชีวิตประจำวัน ชั้นบนสุด ประดับขนมสัญลักษณ์เดือนสิบซึ่งขนมแต่ล่ะชนิดจะมีความหมาย ได้แก่ ขนมลา : เปรียบเสมือนเสื้อผ้าเพื่อให้บรรพบุรุษได้ใช้นุ่งห่ม, ขนมบ้า : เป็นสัญลักษณ์แทนลูกสะบ้า สำหรับไว้ใช้เล่นต้อนรับสงกรานต์, ขนมพอง : เปรียบเสมือนแพให้ผู้ตายใช้เป็นพาหนะข้ามห้วยแห่งทุกและบาปหรือเวร, ขนมดีซำ : เป็นเสมือนเงินตราไว้ใช้สอย และ ขนมกง : เป็นเสมือนเครื่องประดับ ใช้สำหรับตกแต่งร่างกาย

ในวันแรม 14 ค่ำ เดือนสิบ ชาวบ้านจะยกสำรับที่จัดไปวัดและนำภัตตาหารไปถวายพระด้วย เสร็จจากการฉลองสำรับและถวายภัตตาหารแล้วชาวบ้านจะนำขนมอีกส่วนหนึ่งไปวางไว้ตามบริเวณลานวัด เพื่อแผ่ส่วนบุญกุศลเป็นทานแก่ผู้ล่วงลับที่ไม่มีญาติ หรือญาติที่ไม่มาร่วมทำบุญให้ เรียกว่า “การตั้งเปรต” เมื่อแผ่ส่วนบุญกุศลไปยังผู้ที่ล่วงลับไปแล้ว ผู้เฒ่าผู้แก่หนุ่มและเด็กๆ ก็จะเฮโลกัน เข้าไปแย่งขนมที่ตั้งเปรต แย่งกันอย่างอุตลุด เพราะถือว่าการที่ได้กินของเหลือจากการเซ่นไหว้บรรพบุรุษนั้นเป็นสิริมงคลแก่ตัวเองและครอบครัวอย่างยิ่ง ลักษณะการแย่งกันไปเอาขนมเรียกว่า “การชิงเปรต”
