ประวัติความเป็นมา
เป็นชุมชนเดิมของแคว้นหริภุญไชยมาก่อน พญามังรายทรงสร้างเป็นเมืองในปี พ.ศ.๑๘๓๗ โดยมีเรือนหลวงเป็นที่ประทับ มีตลาดและวัดกู่คำซึ่งมีเจดีย์บรรจุอัฐิของมเหสี ลักษณะเป็นเจดีย์เหลี่ยมบรรจุพระพุทธรูปไว้ด้านละ ๑๕ องค์ ในสมัยราชวงศ์มังราย เวียงกุมกามเป็น พันนา หนึ่งของเชียงใหม่ และเป็นเสมือนเมืองหน้าต่างทางด้านใต้ พ.ศ.๒๔๕๑ มีการบูรณะเจดีย์โดยใช้ช่างพม่า เจดีย์จึงมีลักษณะเป็นศิลปะพม่าไป

ลักษณะทั่วไป
ตัวเวียงเป็นรูปสี่เหลี่ยมผืนผ้า กว้าง ๖๐๐ เมตร ยาว ๑,๐๐๐ เมตร ขนานกับทางเดินเก่าของแม่น้ำปิงซึ่งอยู่ในแนวทะแยงทางทิศตะวันตกเฉียงใต้ไปทางทิศตะวันออกเฉียงใต้อีก ๓ ด้าน มีกำแพง ๒ ชั้นล้อมรอบมีคูน้ำอยู่ระหว่างกำแพง เป็นที่ไขน้ำจากแม่น้ำปิงไปเก็บไว้ใช้ในเมือง

หลักฐานที่พบ
พบพระพิมพ์ดินเผาศิลปะหริภุญไชยใต้ฐานสถูปด้านหลังวิหาร โถงและซุ้มปราสาททำให้ทราบว่าเป็นชุมชนของหริภุญไชย นอกจากนี้พบซากโบราณสถาน เช่น วิหารกานโถม วัดอีก้าง วัดปู่เปี้ย วัดธาตุขาวเป็นต้น

เส้นทางเข้าสู่เวียงกุมกาม
จากตัวเมืองเชียงใหม่ มีถนนเข้าสู่เวียงกุมกามได้ ๓ ทาง คือ ถนนสายเชียงใหม่-ลำพูน ถนนเกาะกลางและถนนศรีบุญเรือง
