รศ.ดร.กิตติชัย ไตรรัตนศิริชัย อธิการบดีมหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น กล่าวถึงการแก้ปัญหา อันเกิดจากปัญหาอุบัติเหตุในการจราจร ด้วยความห่วงใยในนักศึกษา บุคลากร ผู้ใช้รถใช้ถนนภายในมหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งสี่แยกไฟแดงสะพานขาว ซึ่งเป็นจุดที่เกิดอุบัติเหตุขึ้นบ่อยครั้งและเคยเกิดการสูญเสียชีวิตขึ้น อันเป็นสิ่งที่ไม่มีผู้ใดต้องการให้เกิดขึ้น ว่า “ มหาวิทยาลัยมีแนวคิดที่จะปรับปรุงระบบปัญหาการจราจร ที่ก่อให้เกิดความไม่ปลอดภัยในชีวิตและทรัพย์สิน เมื่อ 4-5 เดือนที่ผ่านมามีการเกิดอุบัติเหตุยามวิกาล ที่บริเวณสี่แยกสะพานขาว ตัดกับถนนที่ขึ้นไปยังสนามกีฬากลาง ซึ่งอุบัติเหตุ ในครั้งนี้ ทำให้มีผู้เสียชีวิต เป็นสิ่งที่คาดไม่ถึง และไม่อยากให้เกิดขึ้นแม้แต่น้อย ไม่ว่าปัญหาจะเกิดจากสิ่งใด เกิดจากการต่างฝ่ายต่างไม่รักษาวินัยในการจราจร ในเรื่องการขับรถด้วยความเร็วสูง หรืออาจจะเกิดขึ้นจากวิสัยทัศน์ที่ไม่ชัดเจนในยามวิกาล”
