พลังงานลม เป็นพลังงานธรรมชาติที่สะอาดและบริสุทธิ์ ใช้แล้วไม่มีวันหมดสิ้นไปจากโลก

ในประเทศไทย หน่วยงานที่ทำการศึกษาเกี่ยวกับการใช้ประโยชน์จากพลังงานลมยังมีไม่มากนัก ซึ่งอาจเนื่องมาจากอัตราความเร็วลมในประเทศที่ไม่สูงนัก รวมทั้งมีข้อจำกัดทางด้านงบประมาณ อย่างไรก็ดี การไฟฟ้าฝ่ายผลิตแห่งประเทศไทย (กฟผ.) ได้ติดตามศึกษาเรื่องนี้มาตลอดระยะเวลากว่า 17 ปี ผลที่ได้ในขณะนี้นับว่าประสบความสำเร็จไปขั้นหนึ่งแล้ว คือสามารถจ่ายไฟฟ้าจากพลังงานลมที่ผลิตได้ไปใช้งานจริง แม้ว่าจะมีกำลังผลิตน้อยเมื่อเทียบกับพลังงานชนิดอื่น ๆ แต่ กฟผ. ก็ได้ตั้งเป้าหมายที่จะพัฒนาพลังงานชนิดนี้ต่อไปให้มากที่สุดเท่าที่จะเป็นไปได้ในขอบเขตศักยภาพของพลังงานลมที่มีอยู่ในประเทศ
