พลังงานทดแทน ( Alternative Energy ) หมายถึง พลังงานที่ใช้ทดแทนพลังงานจากน้ำมันเชื้อเพลิง ซึ่งจัดเป็นพลังงานหลักที่ใช้กันอยู่ทั่วไปในปัจจุบัน พลังงานทดแทนที่สำคัญได้แก่ พลังงานแสงอาทิตย์ พลังงานน้ำ พลังงานลม พลังงานความร้อนใต้ภิภพ และพลังงานจากชีวมวล เป็นต้น ได้มีการศึกษาค้นคว้าเพื่อนำพลังงานทดแทนมาใช้ประโยชน์มากขึ้น ซึ่งจะช่วยผ่อนคลายปัญหาการขาดแคลนพลังงานในอนาคต และช่วยลดปัญหาด้านมลพิษที่เกิดขึ้นจากการใช้พลังงานในปัจจุบัน

ประเภทของพลังงานทดแทน

เราสามารถแบ่งพลังงานทดแทนตามแหล่งที่ได้มาเป็น 2 ประเภท คือ

1. พลังงานทดแทนประเภทสิ้นเปลือง เป็นพลังงานทดแทนจากแหล่งที่ได้มาแล้วใช้หมดไป ได้แก่ พลังงานถ่านหิน , ก๊าซธรรมชาติ , นิวเคลียร์ , หินน้ำมัน , ทรายน้ำมัน เป็นต้น

2. พลังงานทดแทนประเภทหมุนเวียน เป็นพลังงานทดแทนจากแหล่งที่ใช้แล้วสามารถหมุนเวียนมาใช้ได้อีก ได้แก่ พลังงานจากแสงอาทิตย์ , ลม , ชีวมวล , น้ำ , ความร้อนใต้ภิภพ และไฮโดรเจนเป็นต้น
