ประสบการณ์ในศาสนามีลักษณะความลึกลับ (ธรรมล้ำลึก) เนื่องจากเรากำลังเผชิญหน้ากับ “ความเป็นจริงสูงสุด” ที่ยิ่งใหญ่และอยู่นอกเหนือ เกินขอบเขตสิ่งที่เรามีประสบการณ์พบเห็นในสิ่งทั่วไปในโลกที่เราดำเนินชีวิตอยู่ จึงมีความยากลำบากที่จะเข้าใจและอธิบายได้แน่นอนตายตัว เพราะเป็นการเผชิญหน้ากับความสมบูรณ์สูงสุดที่มีลักษณะแตกต่างจากสิ่งที่เราพบทั่วไป หรือที่ออตโต เรียกว่า “wholly other”



มีนักปรัชญาและเทววิทยาหลายท่านได้อธิบายความหมายของประสบการณ์ในศาสนา ในที่นี้ขอนำเสนอบางแนวคิด ได้แก่ (Adriaan, 1999)
