วัดญาณสังวราราม เป็นพระอารามหลวง ชั้นเอก ชนิดวรมหาวิหาร และถือเป็นวัดประจำรัชกาลพระบาทสมเด็จพระปรเมนทรมหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดชมหาราช เนื่องจากคณะผู้สร้างวัดได้พร้อมใจกันสร้างขึ้นเพื่อน้อมเกล้าน้อมกระหม่อมถวายแด่พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว เนื่องในวโรกาสพระราชพิธีเฉลิมพระชนมพรรษาครบ 5 รอบ
เมื่อปีพ.ศ. 2519 นายแพทย์ขจร และคุณหญิงนิธีวดี อันตระการ พร้อมด้วยบุตรธิดา ได้ถวายที่ดินบริเวณ ต.ห้วยใหญ่ อ.บางละมุง จ.ชลบุรี แด่สมเด็จพระญาณสังวร เจ้าอาวาสวัดบวรนิเวศวิหาร (ปัจจุบันทรงเป็นสมเด็จพระสังฆราช ตั้งแต่ พ.ศ. 2532 -ปัจจุบัน) เป็นเนื้อที่ประมาณ 300 ไร่เศษ และคณะผู้ริเริ่มสร้างวัดได้มีการจัดซื้อที่ดินที่ติดต่อเขตวัดถวายเพิ่มเติมอีกประมาณ 60 ไร่เศษ รวมเป็นเนื้อที่ดินทั้งหมด 366 ไร่ 2 งาน 11 ตารางวา เพื่อสร้างวัดในพระพุทธศาสนา และให้มีนามตามทินนามสมณศักดิ์ของสมเด็จฯ วัดนี้จึงมีชื่อว่า "วัดญาณสังวราราม"
สมเด็จพระญาณสังวรได้รับถวายที่ดินแล้ว ก็ได้ดำเนินการสร้างวัดมาโดยลำดับ วัดญาณสังวราราม ได้รับอนุญาตให้สร้างเป็นสำนักสงฆ์ญาณสังวรารามเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2520 เป็นวัดญาณสังวรารามโดยสมบูรณ์เมื่อวันที่ 21 กุมภาพันธ์ พ.ศ. 2523 และได้รับพระราชทานวิสุงคามสีมา โดยพระราชกฤษฎีกา ลงวันที่ 25 มีนาคม พ.ศ. 2525 ต่อมาพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวปรเมนทรมหาภูมิพลมหาราช ทรงพระมหากรุณารับไว้เป็นวัดในพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์และได้ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ยกวัดญาณสังวรารามเป็นพระอารามหลวงชั้นเอกชนิดวรมหาวิหาร เมื่อวันที่ 4 มีนาคม พ.ศ. 2531
