พระพุทธพจน์คาถาที่สองทรงกล่าวถึง "วิธีการอันเป็นหัวใจสำคัญเพื่อเข้าถึงจุดมุ่งหมายของพระพุทธศาสนาแก่พุทธบริษัททั้งปวงโดยย่อ" คือ การไม่ทำความชั่วทั้งปวง การบำเพ็ญแต่ความดี และการทำจิตของตนให้ผ่องใสเป็นอิสระจากกิเลสทั้งปวง ส่วนนี้เองของโอวาทปาฏิโมกข์ที่พุทธศาสนิกชนมักท่องจำกันไปปฏิบัติ ซึ่งเป็นเพียงหนึ่งคาถาในสามคาถากึ่งของโอวาทปาฏิโมกข์เท่านั้น
ส่วนพระพุทธพจน์คาถาสุดท้าย ทรงกล่าวถึงหลักการปฏิบัติของพระสงฆ์ผู้ทำหน้าที่เผยแผ่พระศาสนา 6 ประการ คือ การไม่กล่าวร้ายใคร, การไม่ทำร้ายใคร , การมีความสำรวมในปาฏิโมกข์ทั้งหลาย, การเป็นผู้รู้จักประมาณในอาหาร และการรู้จักที่นั่งนอนอันสงัด
